Throughout Parrot in the Oven mi vida by Victor Martinez there are stories of a young chicano male living in poverty with a dysfunctional family unable to provide examples that every child needs growing up. The child is faced with dealing with the death of his grandmother, his sister's miscarriage, and initiation into a local gang. Many of the experiences that Manuel lives through were also experienced by Victor Martinez growing up. In a sense, Victor Martinez is using this group of stories to tell the reader the lessons he has learned growing up from such a poverty stricken childhood.…

In “Ancestors” the narrator experiences a disconnection and lack of belonging to his polish heritage. This is shown through the description of his ancestors. Adjectives such as shadowed and faceless show the detachment between the narrator and his ancestors as well as a lack of intimacy. The fact that there are only males present suggests that they have had a greater influence over the narrator’s cultural and social identity than females.…

This text is an extract from the Peterborough version of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, which is a collection of annals narrating the Anglo-Saxon history. The first edition of these annals was written during Alfred the Great’s reign; that is to say during the ninth century. But there are different versions according to the regions. That is why each manuscript shows its author’s subjectivity. These chronicles are a primary source of the time, as well as the Bayeux Tapestry. They were written by monks, that is why we can feel the religious dimension and morality throughout the work. They collected the pieces of information and gathered them in the annals.…
Mr. Shimerda came to America with his family from Bohemia in order to start a new life. He and his wife had four children, two sons and two daughters. Ambrosch was 18, an eldest son and his brother, Marek, was youngest one. Antonia was Yulka’s big sister and they were a few years apart. When they first arrived in Nebraska in summer, they went through a lot of hardship. Mr. Shimerda hardly spoke any English and relied heavily on an interpreter for his family’s daily activities. Bad advices from the interpreter for purchase of homestead cost the family’s entire savings and finally they had to live in a dug-out or cave. When winter came, it made everything even worse. The farm the family owned had little hope to yield anything because Mr. Shimerda knew nothing about farming. “The land was growing rougher; I was told that we were approaching Squaw Creek, which cut up the west half of the Shimerdas ' place and made the land of little value for farming”(Cather 20). He became growingly frustrated since this was not a life he would like his family to have. Only thing he could do was to hunt some rabbits to feed his family. He began missing his home country and talked less and less with his wife and children. In stead, he would rather to spend more time with his friends, Pavel and Peter. Later on, when Pavel died from his long battled illness and Peter left the town, Mr. Shimerda became so depressed that he stopped talking to people. Antonia noticed her father’s behavior, but could not do anything about it. She was the closest one to her dad in the family. She was so worried and she…

Like all good mothers, Gluckel of Hameln wanted nothing but to provide for her children and teach them lifelong lessons. She began to write her book after her beloved husband passed away, leaving her with their twelve children and his prospering business as a merchant to manage. Distraught, Gluckel wrote at night when she couldn’t sleep, with hopes that her words would stay with her children throughout their lives. Over the years, Gluckel wrote when she felt it necessary, collecting seven short books within her autobiography, each conveying its own concept. The book as a whole, however, is based on three main lessons Gluckel wanted to instill into her children: there is no point in questioning God’s actions, the only solution to a man’s misery is to…
