PIG EXTRA CREDIT
1. The locations of the endocrine organs in the fetal pig are similar to the humans except for the adrenal glands and the pancreas. In humans, the adrenal glands are on top of the kidneys and superior to the pancreas. In the fetal pig, the adrenal glands are medial to each kidney and inferior to the pancreas.
2. Two endocrine organs located in the throat region are the thymus and the thyroid gland.
3. Three endocrine organs located in the abdominpelvic cavity are the adrenal glands, pancreas and gonads.
4. Given the assumption that human beings have more stress than pigs, I would expect the endocrine organs to be relatively larger in humans.
5. The thymus in the fetal pig is large because it is a fetus. As the pig matures, the thymus will shrink.
4.
1. The fetal pigs lymphatic drainage pattern is basically similar to those of humans.
2. The thoracic duct receives and drains lymph from everywhere except for what the right lymphatic duct covers. The right lymphatic duct drains lymph from the upper right extremity, head, and thorax delivered by the jugular, subclavian and bronchomediastinal trunks.
3. The differences observed between the origin of the common carotid arteries in the pig and the human were, in the pig, the left common carotid originates from the brachiocephalic trunk and in the human, it originates from the aortic arch.
4. The relative size of the external and internal jugular veins differ in the pig because both internal and external jugular veins were about the same size. In humans, the internal jugular vein has a large size than the external jugular vein.

A few weeks after conception, the heart takes up most of the space in the fetus’ midsection. At first the heart is just a tube, but it grows so fast that it starts to take up a lot of space. In order to conserve space, it bends and twists into the commonly known shape. It starts out beating 90 times per minute due to the intense need for oxygen and slows down to 70 beats per minute by the age 18.…

Through the dissection of the fetal pig, we were able to compare and contrast the structure and functions of the organs to those of a human. We dissected the pig and observed all the exterior and interior structures. We found that because both are mammals, the fetal pig’s structure was almost identical to the human body.…

This report represents an in depth biological study of the sus scrofa and its internal organs located in the ventral body cavity. The purpose of this lab is to compare and contrast the functions of organ systems of humans and fetal pigs, primarily those contained within the ventral body cavity, which includes both thoracic and abdominal cavities. Also, to implement new skills such as dissection and the use of a scalpel as well as other related tools and to attain the ability to locate the organs of the mammalian system and compare their location to that of human organs. Through the process of sus scrofa dissection, insights have been made into the comparison of biological structures between mammals-- particularly fetal pigs, and humans through study of the ventral cavity and the organs lying within. The aforementioned dissection, which was performed with the use of specialized tools such as the scalpel, has yielded fruitful results leading to a greater understanding of the functions of organ systems in other life forms; including the fetal pig. Due to the four-legged nature of the fetal pig, there have been several similarities and differences regarding the human race and the fetal pig. Firstly, the pig possesses a tail whereas humans do not. The second differences observed were the large distinctions in facial structure. The fetal pig, perhaps due to its linear body shape, possessed a thinner, more streamlined facial structure with large, upright ears, and an extended snout. Internally, the fetal pig and the human have been observed to have similar internal organ systems, with size as the major difference between the two. With this knowledge in mind, a better understanding of the differences and similarities between the biological structures of the human race and the animal kingdom has been attained for possible use in methods that could prove beneficial to both. Due to the…

Many scientists are experts when it comes to the placement of the organs in the human and animal body. Scientists can point anywhere and name the organ closest to it, but how do the scientists know exactly where each organ is? How do the scientists know the number of organs that are in your body? How do they know all this? Well, scientists know all about the anatomy of humans and animals because of a procedure called dissection. Dissection is when people cut open and analyze the structures and relations inside. In this situation a fetal pig…

The class viewed sheep brains, human models, and demo cats. The class separated into groups and began locating the listed endocrine glands on the human models. There were also human brain models to identify specific glands. Once finished, the major endocrine glands of the sheep brain were viewed. The sheep brain is quite similar to the human brain except for proportion. Although, the orientation of the human brain is superior to inferior whereas the sheep brain is anterior to posterior. The demo cats were very interesting. One of the cats viewed was pregnant. The placenta was obvious. It surrounded each kitten individually. Although the cat and human are very different externally, both have similar internal composition. Majority of the endocrine glands are placed in similar positions. Some endocrine glands are totally different when it comes to placement. For example, the adrenal glands, in the human models, sit on top of the kidneys. Opposed to the cat, the adrenal glands sit to the side of the kidneys. The thymus is anterior to the heart in the demo cat. The thymus is posterior to the heart in the human models. Although different, the studied examples of endocrine glands were all very similar in structure and…
