Pill Bugs Behavior
INTRODUCTION Pill bugs are most typically found in an outside environment and studies suggest that they prefer to live in a certain environment. This certain environment is moist, and in order to remain most it is most likely dark and cool as oppose to dry and hot. That is why most often when you turn over a large rock that hasn't been disturbed in a while you will find pill bugs making shelter underneath of it. When pill bugs cannot have a habitat that provides them with enough moisture they tend to group together to prevent further moister loss to the environment. In our laboratory setting we were attempting to determine just how often the pill bugs would chose the moist setting over the dry one, and if they did settle in the dry setting would they group together to prevent moisture loss. A simple experiment, as it is only testing really one of the three previously stated habitat expectations of the pill bug. Our hypothesis was if presented with a choice between a wet environment and a dry environment, then the pill bugs would consistently choose the wet environment. The pill bugs used in this experiment were all acquired from the same source, a habitat consisting of soil, paper towels for shelter and water. The experiment will require the use of two, five chamber arenas as well as two, two chamber arenas. It will also require a pill bug sample of at least twenty specimens, and a supply of filter paper to use as the moist and dry bedding for the pill bugs in the arenas. In similar animal behavior experiments more than one element are tested, as in (2008, 09). Pill Bug Lab. StudyMode.com. Retrieved 09, 2008 they tested the pill bugs movements

METHOD
The experiment was to test which the pill bugs preferred, a moist surface or a dry surface. We took twenty random pill bugs and divided them into individual groups of five. We then placed the four groups into isolated bare arena compartments and they were left to acclimate to the environment for ten

Some conclusions that we got were that pill bugs are not well adapted to areas that might be colder or pill bugs won’t exist in that type of weather. Pill Bugs live under rocks or even beneath the rocks. As it is seen on figure 1 the pill bugs had more movement on the 25 C than in the other temperatures. Therefore, pill bugs 25 C is their normal habitat temperature because it has a perfect weather for them to be able to survive. One probable error that the group had was when one of the pill bugs die during the 0 C temperature because it was too cold for them. At the end of the result it was conclusive that the pill bugs had few movements during colder temperatures like 0 C and 35…

The sow bug, also called the pill bug, is an isopod that does not have a wide range of items that it likes to eat. In the experiment we were trying to see how the pill bug reacted with certain man made substances and two substances that they would find in their everyday habitat. We tested ketchup, orange juice, sand, baking soda, flour and water. The pill bugs did not like the ketchup and orange juice I believe because of the strong acidic smell and it didn’t like the baking soda because of the texture. The pill bugs didn’t have a problem with the water and sand because those two are found in the everyday life. The data that we found did not fully support our hypothesis. The pill bugs are very simple isopods that reacted well with the sand because that substance is found in their habitat.…

All animals try to adapt to the environment to survive. The real question is why do living organisms react to environmental factors? For example, a chameleon will change colors to hide from predators. Bears hibernate in the winter to conserve energy because of the food shortages. Likewise, pill bugs avoid light and try to make homes in dark, damp environments and eat decaying plant and animal matter. The reason pill bugs prefer dark and damp environments is because they behave negatively to phototaxis, which is the response to light, and have a partially positive behavior towards hydrotaxis, which is the response to moisture. The reason I say partial behavior is because they do not prefer to live in an all-dry habitat, but they also do not find large bodies of water an ideal habitat as well. In this specific scenario, the object of the…

The purpose of the Sow bug lab was to determine if the Sow bugs had a preference of leaves to eat. A brief description of the procedure is that the leaves were put in a Petri dish full of sand and sow bugs. Then there were recordings of how much of each leaf the Sow bugs had eaten each day. Observations on what the Sow bugs had eaten, and how they were acting were recorded everyday. The Sow bugs preferred the Hickory leaf above all leaves involved in this experiment.…

We then had two experimental groups. The first experimental group was a butterfly with a darker purple wing color. This butterfly also lied flat under the light source. The second experiment group was the same lavender butterfly, but instead of lying flat, the wings were folded over each other and placed on its side under the same light source. For the experimental group, each group within the class conducted two ten minute trials and collected 60 samples per minute. Our Null Hypothesis was that the behavior and coloration of the butterflies’ wings had no effect on thermoregulation. Our Alternative Hypothesis was that behavior and coloration had an effect on thermoregulation. Our results led us to fail to reject the Null Hypothesis due to the fact that our p level exceeded 5%. Therefore, we cannot say that behavior and coloration had an effect or that it did not have an effect on thermoregulation.…
