Map Series: A group of topographic maps having the same scale and cartographic specifications, and with each map identified by its publisher as part of the same series
These occur when a map is so large due to its scale it needs to be spread over several sheets
Map scale: the ratio of a distance on the map to the corresponding difference of that in real life
Map index: Designed to give relationship between sheets in a series and their coverage, availability, as well as further information on the series.
Marginal information: helps tell about where the map is located. This location includes the sheet name, sheet number, series name, scale, series number, edition number, index to boundaries, adjoining sheets diagram, elevation guide, declination diagram, bar scales, contour interval note, spheroid note, grid note, projection note, vertical datum note, horizontal datum note, control note, preparation note, printing note, printing note, grid reference box, unit imprint and symbol, legend. Info on all these marginal infos can be found at : http://www.armystudyguide.com/content/army_board_study_guide_topics/land_navigation_map_reading/marginal-information-found-on-a-military-map.shtml
Map Contours: Lines on a map that connect points of equal elevation
Show elevation and shape of terrain
Illustrates shape of land surface -- topography
Contour interval is how much space is in between each line
Every 5th contour line is an index contour. These are the ones that show the elevation because it's impractical to mark the elevation of every line on the map. They are usually darker or wider.
To tell if it's a steep slope or not, the lines would be closely together because 10 feet goes by much quicker on a slope.
Magnetic Declination: The angle between the compass north and true north(the direction along the earth's surface towards the geographic North Pole. Magnetic Declination is synonymous with Magnetic Variation
