Every child is an individual with different needs depending on their age and abilities. This is what we take into account when planning activities. For example if more consideration needs to be taken for a child who has become mobile then a child who has been for a while when setting out room layouts. We would have to ensure all toys in each room are at the suitable age for the room specific.
Some children have specific needs such as sensory impairments, for example thinking about the challenges to a child with limited hearing understanding explanations about safety. The different needs of families and carers must be considered. We are always clear as to why we are using that particular environment, the activities they are doing and the sorts of services are offered.
The duty of care of a setting to children, parents and carers is a legal obligation. We should always have the child’s safety and welfare uppermost in our mind and planning. When it comes to building up a nursery I would have to take into account that there are such things as door closers, which stop the door from slamming and possibly trapping fingers. At Kinder Haven we have paint on the walls that is easy to wipe down, for hygiene reasons. We also like most nurseries have covers over the plug sockets.

To ensure that we maintain a healthy and safe environment we do daily checks to make sure everything is working well and safe. Our senior member of staff does checks every day and one of the other members of staff in the same room does an outdoor risk assessment every time before taking children outside, looking for simple thing like, broken toys, animal faeces ect.
Our nursery is a healthy and safe place to be as we constantly risk asses and if we see anything that could be a risk to not only the children but anyone visiting the nursery, we deal with it as soon as we can.
