plate tectonics
1. Compare the age of igneous rock found near the mid-ocean ridge with that of igneous rock found farther away from the ridge. The ages of the igneous rock found near the mid-ocean ridge was younger than the igneous rock found farther away from the ridge. This is because of convection currents. Magma rises because it is less dense. It is forced out of the ridge, it spreads apart, and when it cools, it becomes new seafloor. This is why newer seafloor (igneous rock) is younger when it is closer to the ridge.
2. If the distance from a point on the coast of Africa to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge is approximately 2,400 km, calculate how long ago that point in Africa was at or near the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. That point in Africa was at or near the Mid-Atlantic Ridge 192 million years ago. I got this answer because I know that the movement of the seafloor is about 1.25 cm per year. I converted 2,400 km in to 240,000,000 cm. Then I divided 240,000,000 by 1.25, and I got 192 million years.
3. How could you use this method to reconstruct Pangaea? I could use this method to reconstruct Pangaea. I could do this by calculating the distance of each of the continents from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Then I could convert the distance to cm, and divide that distance by 1.25 cm. This would tell me how long ago Pangaea was on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. I would also be able visualize or reconstruct it.

Determining Red 40 Concentrations Using Absorption with Beer’s Law Introduction I like color and enjoyed learning about wavelengths and the spectrum of light, so I considered incorporating something related to that into my Internal Assessment. We also had just used concentrations in our Group 4 Project, so when I found an experiment that dealt with both of these I thought it was a great idea. This experiment is not completely original; the basic concept has been used multiple times. It uses Beer’s Law: · A is light absorbance · is “molar absorptivity with units of L mol-1 cm-1” · l is the length of the cuvette in centimeters · c is the concentration of the solution in mol L-1…

    Plate Tectonics Theory

Plate tectonics theory, which is the modern theory of the motions of Earth’s layer, explains how geological features, such as mountain ranges, continents, and bodies of water move and form. An important aspect of plate tectonics theory is that the outer layer of the earth is divided into plates which move across the earth’s surface. “These plates move relative to each other, typically at rates of 2-4 inches per year. As the plates move, they interact along their boundaries” (Plate Tectonics). In other words, the formation of geological features occur at the plate boundaries which is where plates slide and interact. There are four types of plate boundaries: divergent boundaries, convergent boundaries, transform…

Creator Winnie Holzman’s show “My So-Called Life” and Marjane Satrapi’s The Complete Persepolis both highlight the immense changes that surround adolescences in their relationships with others as well as how they perceive their own identity. It is during the stage of adolescence and emerging adulthood that young people are dealing with what Erikson refers to as identity versus confusion, in which adolescence are doing a lot of re-visitation to past stages of their life, and are constantly at battle with understanding truly who they are. Holzman’s show follows an adolescent named Angela Chase, who is a high school sophomore trying to discover and assert her identity. Satrapi’s graphic novel depicts her hardships with being an adolescent in a new country away from her family, and how she struggles with understanding her true self.…

    Plate Tectonics Movement

Plate tectonics have played a major role in the history of the Earth. All seven continents are where they are today due to the movement of plate tectonics. These seven continents were one big supercontinent called “Pangea” about 200 million years ago before breaking apart. The three different types of plate boundaries are convergent, divergent, and transform. These plate boundaries form due to the earth’s outer shell called the lithosphere having multiple plates moving around each other within the earth’s surface, allowing them to collide, separate, or slide past each other.…

    Four Geological Eras

    • 743 Words
    • 3 Pages

The history of the Earth is categorized into four different geological time eras beginning with, the Precambrian Time (4.6 billion-544 million years ago), the Paleozoic Era (544-248 million years ago), the Mesozoic Era (248-65 million years ago), and the Cenozoic Era (65 million years ago to the present). Eras are broken down further into smaller units called periods, which help scientists detect changes in Earth's history. Geologists's main sources of evidence for geological eras, and periods are the ages of rocks. There are several methods geologists't use to determine the age of rocks such as, relative age, the law of superposition, index fossils, relative dating, and radioactive dating. Through scientific reasoning and evidence this research…
