Sun Valley Fruit Snacks
You are the Controller of Sun Valley Fruit Snacks, a family-owned company based in
British Columbia that was started in 1950 by Norman Beauchamp. His granddaughter,
Christine Beauchamp, is the current CEO; under her leadership the company has grown to $100 million dollars in sales across North America. She is proud of her company’s ability to develop innovative products that meet changing consumer tastes. Christine and her three siblings are equal shareholders in Sun Valley.
Sun Valley’s mission statement reads as follows:
At Sun Valley Fruit Snacks we strive to produce, sell and distribute healthy, top-quality products for our North American customers.
Sun Valley produces a range of fruit-based snacks, including bars, twists and shapes, that are under both the Sun Valley brand and private-label brands such as Loblaws’
President’s Choice. Currently there are two rented manufacturing facilities, one based in
Penticton, B.C., and the other in Riverside, Washington. Both facilities are located in prime apple-growing regions—apples are the main ingredient in most products. The
Penticton and Riverside facilities have capacities of 70M and 140M units respectively.
The Penticton facility was the original plant started by Norman in 1950 and currently operates at 70% capacity. It employs 50 local residents, many with more than 20 years of service, and contributes to the community through sponsorship of local youth sports teams. Although the equipment is old, the line is well maintained by the on-site maintenance team. Shipments are rarely late and contain few errors, mitigating the risks of penalties imposed by private-label customers. There is currently a rumour circulating around the company that it may close down this facility and move all production to
Riverside. This has caused some issues with employee morale.
Riverside, in contrast, has had numerous quality and shipping issues. The facility was

six full time residents and has a meager online presence consisting of only a website. The owners have recently bought another house with the goal of creating an additional adult family home and will soon be in need of six residents and at least four employees. Their current marketing strategies consist mainly of word of mouth and printed ads in local newspapers. This business could greatly benefit from growing its online presence especially during this vulnerable time of expansion. There are currently over 73,000 residents in Snohomish County over the age of 65 (United States Census Bureau, 2013). Online marketing would make it much easier and more economical to reach a growing customer base whose online focus and technological prowess continues to increase. The real customer is not the elderly person themselves. It is usually their children, often in their fifties and sixties, who are in need of a safe environment for their parents or loved ones to live where they can be assured that a high level of personal care and medical attention will be available. The idea of expanding online would be to market the business to a larger number of target customers than current marketing techniques are able to. An expanding customer base would allow the business to choose it’s residents based on level of care needed, matching personality characteristics with current residents, and those who can afford private pay instead of State pay. State pay…

What good is life if there is no chance of living? This question centers on the case of Sun Hudson, the baby born with a fatal form of dwarfism who was removed from life support after 6 months. The most relevant information in this case was the decision to remove life support from the child contrary to the mother’s wishes. Was it morally correct or incorrect? Some people may believe that the child’s parent has the right to make decisions in regard to the child’s medical treatment. Others may believe that although the physicians may find it in Sun’s best interest to be removed from life support, the mother has a right to keep her son alive. My personal belief is that quality of life outweighs quantity and this is why I believe that it…
