Have you ever tried to be so perfect at something and it ended up going all wrong? I have. In the essay “So What’s So Bad About Being So-So?” by Lisa Wilson Strick (205-207) she makes the point that being perfect doesn’t always turn out the way you hope. I completely concur with her. Perfection can often be a wonderful thing, but for me, perfection caused me to have a very low confidence and so it became a vice in my life.…

In the essay, “From the Poets in the Kitchen,” Paule Marshall talks about a time when she listened to a novelist who said that women possess the ability to talk with ordinary and typical words, which some expert writers use. This novelist also said that women, who use everyday words, converse mostly in the kitchen, and this experience plays an enormous role into them becoming a skillful writer. In addition, Marshall goes on to agree with the novelist by saying that “the proper measure of a writer’s talent is his skill in rendering everyday speech” (Marshall 139).…

The second ingredient of Mrs. Fields’ recipe is perfection, which translates to always giving it your best. The rationale behind this ingredient is that settling for less than your best allows for a mentality to be developed where you only put forth enough effort to either blend in or meet the minimum requirements. This type of mentality also…

The works we studied within Creative Writing were all helpful in creating my own works to submit to the class. Throughout all of the reading, many of the works inspired me in different ways, whether it was short story plot ideas or word usage in the poems. While crafting my work for the final portfolio, I reviewed many of the poems from our poetry packet in an effort to find inspiration and to create new interesting images. I took the most inspiration for my formal poem, which I found most difficult to write. One of the poems that was most useful to me was Jilly Dybka’s “Memphis, 1976.” Dybka’s poem follows the sestina form; I also wrote my last poem in this form, so it helped to follow the form by looking at her poem as an example. Dybka’s…

Lorna Dee Cervantes' poem, “Poema para los Californios Muertos” (“Poem for the Dead Californios”), is a commentary on what happened to the original inhabitants of California when California was still Mexico, and an address to the speaker's dead ancestors. Utilizing a unique dynamic, consistently alternating between Spanish and English, Cervantes accurately represents the fear, hatred, and humility experienced by the “Californios” through rhythm, arrangement, tone, and most importantly, through use of language.…

The text that I will be analyzing is a poem by Lorna Crozier called The Child Who Walks Backwards. Throughout my analysis I will look into parental abuse, underlying meanings in the lines in the poetry, as well as connections I can make personally to the book. I think it is also important that I bring forth essential messages in the words and statements of the poem. The main theme I will choose to focus on is that abuse does not only happen at school or back alleys, but that it happens in homes as well.…

“Slaveship,” by Lucille Clifton, is a free verse poem from the perspective of slaves that the white men capture and trade in the slave trade, forcing them to travel on the Middle Passage. Ironically, the ships bear the names of religious symbols and figures such as Jesus, Angel of God, and Grace of God (lines 14-15) even though the act of slavery is one of the most sinful systems in the eyes of these slaves and in the eyes of all decent human beings.…

Have you ever felt like you were born to do something? Since I was born I felt like I was born to play baseball, but after that I would love to be a broadcaster. On the other hand, the dinner we cook isn’t ‘MasterChef’ standard. When it comes to our appearance, we’re never thin enough, tall enough, pretty enough or good looking enough. These characteristics are often associated with perfectionism. Perfectionism is often mistaken for ‘being perfect’ or doing something ‘perfectly’. However, there’s a fine line between having aspirations and having aspirations but criticizing yourself along the way.…

In our fast-paced world, it’s always about being better and faster – not only as compared to others, but as we were before. Life is seen as a competition, and only the fittest survive. Perfection is both ideal and a norm. However, as the saying goes, nobody is perfect. It is the striving for this seemingly paradoxical goal that leaves feelings of inadequacy and disappointment. Disappointments in life are inevitable, and so are challenges and difficulties. It is noted however, that some seem to thrive while others cannot, more surprisingly so, even under the same conditions. The question therefore, is what differentiates the former from the latter?…
