The reader can infer that sounds in the poem are coming from line 1, 4, and 6. In line one the writers says the eagle clasps the crag with crooked hands, I can hear the eagles sharp talons scratching against the rocks. In line four the writer says the wrinkled sea beneath him crawls in that line I can hear the gentle waves splashing against big rocks. In line six the author says and like a thunderbolt he falls in this line I hear a eagle swooping down to the ground with wind whistling through his wings. This show that the author uses good words in describing the actions of the eagle.…
In the novel Inside Out and Back Again, there’s this girl named Ha who is 10 years old who lives with 3 older brothers and her mother. She lives peacefully in her hometown in Saigon. Now the Vietnam War has reached her home, so Ha and her family are forced to flee home as Saigon falls to the Communists. Ha moves to Alabama where she will soon faced a lot of challenges because she is a refugee, but will soon overcome these challenges. Ha was a girl who was stubborn and sneaky. When she was still in Vietnam, she did lots of things that she wasn’t supposed to do like placing her big toe on the floor on Tet or secretly buying things she wasn’t supposed to buy. A refugee’s transition to another country is hard, because they can’t speak the language…
Only owning a hedgehog for a few weeks, I quickly realized that the poor thing got rather dirty. Small pieces of the cage liner and nesting materials easily became lodged between the quills that covered his back. Bathing a hedgehog can't be that difficult. I remembered back to the instructions the pet store clerk told me. Use tear free soap, scrub him with a toothbrush, and use a flannel like fabric to dry him. Determined to make my hedgehog look as pristine as possible I pursued the necessary materials. I quickly found an unused toothbrush and the tear free soap, but the flannel fabric seemed silly. I’m not entirely sure what flannel really was, so I decided to use a regular old towel instead. After inspecting the towels tag,…
Many writers on their venture to becoming great, are faced with roadblocks. I too feel those stresses. When sitting down to begin a story, novel, or poem we all strive to be different. But as Baldwin explains, "there is no original thought, because we all humans think and feel has been thought and felt so many times before, by so many generations." This in itself makes starting writing a very daunting task. Not to mention the sea of fellow authors you are competing with for limited shelf space. A trip to a jam packed bookstore reiterates this feeling instantaneously. Really, what sets the writer apart is the original perspective and finding out what shape to give it to really hold the readers attention. This can all be achieved through the power in…
Both swallowed in their job, the janitor in “Jorge the Church Janitor Finally Quits” by Martin Espada and the secretary in “The Secretary Chant” by Marge Piercy feel unappreciated and lost as employees. Jorge is “outside…of [Americans] understanding” and The Secretary is lost in her work and compares herself to objects such as her “hips are a desk.” The employees from these poems have become hidden behind their duties and are slowly sinking into the unknown.…

It illustrates the power of the quilt to connect the speaker to other lives in her family. As previously noted, the yellow, white, and brown shades on the quilt resembles the colors of the skin tones of her family. Therefore, the quilt is an active representation of the people in her family that the speaker identifies with and is a part of. The gestures of “caressing” by the imaginary fingers of the colors of the quilt represent the intimacy and trust that the blanket evokes. It suggests that the speaker’s heritage is deeply close to her. This gentle motion of stroking that the speaker hopes will ease her transition into death “into the silence,” along with the wish that she would like to die under the quilt may symbolize the intentions of living for and taking the values of her culture and history with her in…
A relationship is how two or more people are connected to one another. In an ideal relationship the people in it benefit from it but sometimes it's the exact opposite. Lennie, George, Curley, and his wife from Of Mice and Men by john Steinbeck along phineas and gene from A Separate Peace by John Knowles, give examples of a relationship and how the people in it affect one another. The book Of Mice and Men is about two men one of which deeply depends on the other. The book a separate peace is about two boys who are very different but still remain to be best friends. All these characters show how relationships can hinder a person from achieving their goals.…

The works we studied within Creative Writing were all helpful in creating my own works to submit to the class. Throughout all of the reading, many of the works inspired me in different ways, whether it was short story plot ideas or word usage in the poems. While crafting my work for the final portfolio, I reviewed many of the poems from our poetry packet in an effort to find inspiration and to create new interesting images. I took the most inspiration for my formal poem, which I found most difficult to write. One of the poems that was most useful to me was Jilly Dybka’s “Memphis, 1976.” Dybka’s poem follows the sestina form; I also wrote my last poem in this form, so it helped to follow the form by looking at her poem as an example. Dybka’s…
