They have seen the season grow by more than ten days per decade which is among the highest rates in the Arctic (Spotts 2). Residents who have lived near the area for their whole lives notice the changes. They call it the “furry invasion,” (Usha 2). Since polar bears mainly hunt during the winter months they are losing time for their preparation for their fasting time. They are picky eaters. They love to eat seals. The only way to hunt these seals is by going on ice and jumping in the water to catch and eat the tasty meal. “According to an article about the struggle for survival for polar bears “Ice floes on the open serve as hunting platforms for the bears, whose winter diet of seals, snagged as they come up for air through breaks in the ice, builds the fat reserves polar bears need to survive on land during the sea-ice melt season,” (Spotts 1). Animals should not change what they enjoy to eat just because of an issue like global warming. With the ice-free period gaining time polar bears need to hunt faster and more just to get ready for the summer. In the ice-free period they fast. Fasting …show more content…
Worldwide the US Environmental Protection Agency put polar bears as an endangered species in May 2008 to help prevent hunting of them and to use them as an example of the ecological effects of global warming (spotts 2). In small town Detroit Lakes two sisters, Greta and Carly Fritz, started a clothing line called Arktikos to raise money and awareness to polar bears (Gerdes 2). Greta explains that “‘They’ve given 1.3 million dollars this year to organizations that help polar bears and fight climate change,”’ (Gerdes 3). Fifteen percent of their proceeds go to support Polar Bears International (Gerdes 3). In a local town by Hudson Bay the town put in a program called “Bear Alert” (Usha 3). “‘Residents can call the bear hotline, day or night, to report errant bears. Manitoba Conservation officer Richard Romaniuk and his crew will shoot the bear with a tranquilizing dart and haul it to jail,”’ (Usha 3). In these bear jails the polar bears wait behind bars until the bay freezes or until they can be airlifted and taken somewhere further north (usha 3). All of these things will help polar bears, but way more needs to be
