Police Corruption is a nationwide problem that has been going on since policing existed. Police officers give in to temptation, because it is human nature to take the easy way out, in order to gain personal benefit by whatever means possible. Especially because the police officer earn middle class wages and when money or favors are offered it’s hard for these officers not to give in to the corruption. I believe that this affects the public because it becomes harder to trust in the integrity of the people that are supposed to be protecting us. Instead we hear of these law men taking bribes from criminals instead of doing their job and locking them up. I honestly didn’t realize that corruption actually went on; I always assumed that officers were the honest people, an example for others. After watching The Departed it made me realize that even though there are great officers out there are also corrupt officers that are selfish and care about themselves. Back home in Washington police officers have a bad reputation of being corrupt and at times it feels as if the officer’s just are there to collect a paycheck and really don’t protect and serve the communities. I have friends and family members that have told me tales of police officers that are so corrupt they are scared to even call them because they believe that they might not even take them serious and let them fall to the wayside.
