*Jan 1st - A New Hampshire law legalizing civil unions for same-sex couples comes into effect. May 15th - California becomes the second U.S. state after Massachusetts in 2004 to legalize same-sex marriage after the state's own Supreme Court rules a previous ban unconstitutional.

*Feb 24th - Fidel Castro retires as the President of Cuba after nearly fifty years.

*Mar 17th - New York State Governor Eliot Spitzer resigns after a scandal involving a high-end prostitute. David Paterson becomes acting New York State governor.

*Mar 24th - Bhutan officially becomes a democracy, with its first ever general election.

*Aug 27th - Barack Obama becomes the first African-American to be nominated by a major political party for President of the United States. Nov 4th - Barack Obama becomes the first African-American to be elected President of the United States

*Dec 14th - President George W. Bush made his fourth and final (planned) trip to Iraq as president and almost got struck by two shoes thrown at him by Iraqi journalist Muntadhar al-Zaidi during a farewell conference in Baghdad.

2009 Political Events

*Feb 1st - Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir is elected as the first female Prime Minister of Iceland, becoming the first openly gay Head of State in the modern world.

*Mar 4th - The International Criminal Court (ICC) issues an arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur. Al-Bashir is the first sitting head of state to be indicted by the ICC since its establishment in 2002.

* Apr 30th - The United Kingdom formally ends combat operations in Iraq.

*Oct 4th - George Papandreou's Panhellenic Socialist Movement defeats Greece's governing New Democracy party in an electoral landslide.
