Due to the practical part of my studies I travelled to Hong Kong to complete a six month traineeship at a private school. Besides the food and cultural difference I noticed that the people were aware of the fact that their live was dramatically different compared to the life of the rest of Chinas population.
Especially the term “One country, two system “points out Hong Kong´s special political situation in connection to China. The term was originally used to describe a constitutional principle, which was formulated by Deng Xiaoping, for the reunification of the country during the 1980s. He suggested that there would be only one territorial China, but distinct regions such as Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan could retain their capitalist economy, while the rest of China would remain a socialist country. Over the last years the term was adopted in the everyday speech and is used to illustrate the difference between China and the above mentioned regions. The main question these days is if a country like China that is still searching its place in a globalized world is able to maintain the political stability and social peace in their socialistic working regions as well as the capitalistic ones. To answer this question I will examine Chinas current situation, the development that lead to this situation and its global influence and importance. Then I will constrain my view to Hong Kong, its special colonial history, discuss the handover and try to give a good insight into its political system.
My aim is to find out whether Hong Kong´s political landscape and structures changed since becoming a part of a communistic country. Furthermore a comparison between China and Hong Kong with regards to their political systems, their understanding of human rights and freedom of speech will be given. In the end I will give a reference to the questionnaires and present an overall personal conclusion.
