Ex. is that when slavery still existed, different territories had different opinions so, they let each territory decide if they wanted slavery or not..
2. Limited Government- Basic principle of American government which states that government is restricted in what it may do, and each individual has rights, and the govt. can’t take away.
Ex. Police need a warrant to enter your home
3. Constitulalism- basic principle that government and those who govern must obey the law, rule of law.
4. Rule of Law- Concept that the government and its officers are always subject to law.
Ex. The near impeachments of US presidents, the highest executive in America is still subject the law.
5. Separation of Powers- Basic principle of American system of government that the executive, legislative, and judicial powers are divided equally.
Ex.The House and Senate may pass a law that the President does not like. He can veto the law. To override the video requires 2/3 vote of both houses.
6. Checks and Balances- System of overlapping the powers of the legislative, executive, judicial branches to permit each branch to check the actions of others.
Ex. The three branches of US government
Executive (enforces the laws... The President)
Legislative (makes the laws... Congress)
Judicial (interpret the laws... The Supreme Court)
The branches check and balance each other. None have absolute authority and require the other to function properly.
7. Veto- Chief Executives power to reject a bill passed by a legislature.
8. Judicial Review- The power of a court to determine the constitutionally of a governmental action.

9. Unconstitutional – Contrary to constitutional provision and so illegal, null and void , of no force and effect.
Ex. Portions of the
