Valdez, Chris Roland R. Theology I
1-NUR5 Reflection Paper
One of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI’s acts is the declaration Year of Faith (2012-2013) which calls us to reexamine our Christian Faith amidst all current struggles and a chance to renew our commitment with God. Before he left the papacy, he left in his pontificate three theological virtues which are faith, hope and love that is linked to the Year of Faith.
Faith enables us to recognize Christ. Without faith, we cannot love Him as we love others. As written in Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI’s Apostolic Letter ‘Porto Fidei’, we, Christians, take faith for granted because we are more concerned with the impending consequences of the social, cultural and political aspects of life that we think faith is just a mere manifested assumption.
Personally, I was struck by this for I customarily think of the effects of what I would initially do and as a result, I usually do only what is to have a certain good outcome, and rather have little to no faith in what I do. I realized that my faith in personal circumstances is also the same faith that I have in God. With this, I have to have stronger faith in what I do as well as with God. The Year of Faith is an opportunity for me to reassess my basic faith in God, eventually leading me to my personal faith. As written in ‘Porto Fidei’, there is a need for stronger ecclesial commitment to the New Evangelization to rediscover belief and enthusiasm for communicating the faith. With good faith, we are expecting a faithful and Christian living amidst all circumstances, giving us hope.
Moreover, nourishment of faith is a lifelong commitment so the Year of Faith does not end its purpose after a year, but rather a lifelong reflection of one’s faith on Him.
Love is present in our faith in God, including love of God. It is His love that fills out hearts and drives us to evangelize. It is the reason why God saved us in Jesus Christ. In return, we are ought to live

Like anything in life, faith starts out for most as a journey. Often growth in faith is so gradual it is hardly noticeable. There’s no thundering voice of God striking down the disbelievers, but rather small miracles like getting an A on a test with little preparation. It is only self reflection faith grows because of struggles in life. In A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving, John Wheelwright’s faith and his belief in miracles juxtaposes Owen Meany’s innate beliefs. John Irving follows John Wheelwright’s growth in faith and miracles and highlights Owen’s steady support.…

All throughout generations, humans have desired to know what to put their faith into when it appears that God is not there. To Louie Zamperini, he finds that if he does not put his trust in the Lord and does not ask to be saved, that he would surely be put to death. Through Laura Hillenbrand’s Unbroken, pastor Billy Graham displays how impactful God is through maintaining faith and how to live that life through Him: “What God asks of men, said Graham, is faith. His Invisibility is the truest test of that faith. To know who sees him, God makes himself unseen.” (Hillenbrand 190)…

Faith is the concept of having complete trust or confidence in someone or something. Faith is a very powerful concept of the mind. It can influence a person to act in ways never thought possible. One’s beliefs may be so important to them that they may even be the center of that person’s life. Take Elie Wiesel, for example. He was a very religious person during his lifetime, let alone his youth. He would talk about his desire as a young boy to go and study Kabbalah whenever the opportunity presented itself. He loved the religion, and his faithfulness for it was one of the reasons why he was strong enough to make it out of the Holocaust alive.…

With a church on just about every corner it is clear that faith is crucial in our society. Faith keeps our moral compasses pointing in the right direction and gives us something to believe in when all hope has vanished. It keeps us linked to one another in a monumental way, providing us a more socially responsible attitude. We as humans have faith that whatever “higher power” or “God” we believe in is watching out for us. There is a “plan” in everything we endure; nothing is…

As seen with Kant’s argument concerning morality, man can reason many truths. However, these truths acquire a deeper meaning when considered in the broader scope of faith. As Paul II notes, faith “allows reason to attain correctly what it seeks to know and to place it within the ultimate order of things,” (Paul II 12). In the case of morality, man could reason to find the morality of an action, but it isn’t until he combines this reason with faith that he can conclude the full importance of his action on a larger scale and in relation to God and his fellow man. By doing this, man attains a unique perspective on the the implications of his actions that is not available solely through reason. Despite having a positive attitude toward reason, Kant’s assertion does not create a necessary rupture between faith and reason.…
