Portrayal of Gender in the Passion of New Eve
The Passion of New Eve

How is gender presented in the novel?

Females are subservient throughout the whole novel, whereas men and dominate

- First scene – Evelyn forgets the woman’s name in the cinema ‘otherwise forgotten’ (5),
- Women are constantly objectified > Tristessa
- Leilah – he ties her up and forget about her the whole day, not tying her feet up is considered a kindness > she has no choice. He dominates and takes advantage of her, she is merely a sexual object, he doesn’t mind her being with other men.
- Zero, he has many wives, and they are passive/submissive > applaud his rape. ‘If he let the pigs do as he pleased, he demanded absolute subservience from his women’ (92), this shows how Zero values animals above women, he believes they need to be kept, controlled and maintained.

Male and female cannot exist equally, in order for women to gain power they need to turn men in to women > feminise them

Men are controlled by their sexual desires/urges, (ironic – animalist urge) ‘in the grip of savage desire’ (20) > it is never portrayed as a good, healthy and natural inclination; instead it is portrayed as violent and aggressive. Zero has a very masochistic view of sex, he enjoys seeing women in pain. This is the ultimate male supremacy; he exercises his dominance over women when they are at their most vulnerable.

What means are used by the various characters and groups to establish, maintain and / or disrupt clear ideas of masculine and feminine identity and behaviour?

Evelyn, a female name? From the start the reader questions his male identity, disrupting a clear masculine ideal.

It adheres to traditional views as one Evelyn is accepted in to the matriarchy he immediately becomes aware of his appearance, vanity being traditionally considered a female trait > it is as though his change has already begun. He can’t understand why Sophie does not see his beauty, as it is expected that women should be more concerned with their looks.

A women in Hegemony and Traditional masculinity would be marginalized and need the aid of a man’s power. Elsie, Flora and Sara are example needing the power of a man to direct them and even save them. But Cookie has her own power. For example eighteen minutes and one second in to episode one Cookie Demand respect from Hakeem and when he refused she beat him with a broom. The act of violence is not power just a mechanism to establish or maintain power. For example when Elsie was confronted Gus she punched him and ran away. Elsie’s violence is not equal to Cookie’s violence because Elsie was afraid and Cookie was establishing respect. The Jamal is another prime example of person deed by Hegemony and traditional masculinity undesiring power. Women are equal to men. Doesn't it balance out? Unfortunately in society, they aren't treated that way. One example of this is in the play 'Taming of the Shrew' as it displays women as the lesser sex, with male lead Petruchio placing a bet on his ability to 'tame' Katherine, a mean bat, but also his future wife.…

Setting including time period and location can have a direct effect on how genders roles are perceived. I believe that this is true in both fiction and in real life when the times are good and the country is stable people will fall into the age old mindset that men are the rulers of the household, country and any establishment of power while women are the homemakers, the healers and the bearers of children. This is because people are afraid of changing anything lest their comfort and stability be taken away-why change what’s been tried and proven and risk upsetting the peace we have now? When times are tough however, people will look towards those who can lead them back to comfort and stability-no matter their gender.…

There emerges a great curiosity as to who had the upper hand when it came to control. However, as the saying goes, behind every great man is an even greater woman. In the tale “The Thousand and One Nights,” a woman’s sexuality, emotions, and physical actions towards men are not overtly influential. However, when considering, how women used sexual and emotional control towards men, you start to wonder who is really in control. The women are in control. All men are created equal; this includes women as well. Over a decade of years, women certainly have come a long way to gain the same kind of equal equality as men, such as being able to vote and being able to join the armed forces and fight alongside men. As growing up I was always told that playing dolls is a girl’s toy and playing a car is a boy’s toy. In my cultural, I was taught that girl couldn’t work in a male job, and I was taught to do housework while the men did nothing around the house. In my house/culture, the men are the provider while the women in my opinion are the servant in which caters to every male in the household. If people were to think about combat in the army many just picture a male behind the military ACU (advanced…

This dehumanises the female sex and makes apparent the lack of female voice in institutional academic discourse. Woolf evokes the economic imbalance through the description of the separate genders meals as well as the language she utilises to reflect each genders economic standing. The cultural restraints that had once stopped women from attaining the same level of accomplishment as men had been relaxed during the post WWII period. Throughout Albee’s text this is made apparent through Martha’s subversion of the traditional conception of a passive demure woman. Martha is represented as being disenchanted and dis-satisfied and the relationship shared between her and George is made to appear dysfunctional in order to present to the reader that by Martha going against the natural order of things by refusing to be a stereotypical house wife, that society cannot function properly and that it threatens the very foundations of the world’s…

It is built into every society that the male is the dominant figure and that women are inferior. Victimization of women through rape culture does not attack men for their unacceptable behavior, but instead it is the women who must change their ways. Okonkwo in Things Fall Apart has numerous wives, and he beats them as it is not looked upon as a problem. THey are powerless to his male dominance in the community and within the home. In that society is bad to be looked upon as womanlike and immensely emasculating for men to be seen in this manner. A female crime is that of a weak and less important action that has been done. This lower status is seen as normal and how the world should operate. In Crime and Punishment, prostitution is a way in which women are deemed powerless and it is easy to take advantage of them. Sonya is a goodhearted girl who cares about her family, but the powerlessness of women leads her to prostitution to provide for her family in her fathers absence of being sustainable source for the family. Raskolnikov also sees a very drunk girl being preyed upon by a man in the dark of the night. He feels motivated to save her because it remind him of his sister and how she stumbles into harm's way by older males. He also sees the powerlessness brought to his attention as he kills Lizaveta. Her childlike face shows her victimization as she is unable to escape…

This fact is proven by the fact that he commands her about what piece of clothing she should remove and at what time. Quotes like “Unlace yourself”, “off with that girdle”, and “off with those shoes”, are all clear example of the above mentioned fact and thus it is clear that he is in complete control of the situation. This dominance and egotism is apparent from the beginning of the poem as he urges her to come to bed with him and instructing her to remove her clothes whether or not she wants to; he completely ignores her absent feelings. His disregard for her feelings are reflected by the lack of response on her part. The author further views the woman’s naked body as “the far fairer world” which should be discovered and used to his advantage or, in simpler terms, to be conquered. Work on the coherence between this paragraph and the…
