In this essay I will be talking about both negative and positive factors that influence development during the different life stages. The different life stages that occur in everyone’s life are infancy, childhood, adolescence, younger adulthood, middle age adulthood, old age and then end of life.
There are two different types of socialisation, these are primary and secondary. Primary socialisation comes from your family and/or carers – this happens in infancy. An example of this would be that it is argued that if a child doesn’t receive the right type of primary socialisation, then it’s a strong possibility they will not turn out as “decent” human beings. Secondary socialisation is what you get from socialising with friends, teachers and other people at things like clubs and different outings – this is especially important during childhood, and adolescence. If you hang around with people that swear a lot, it will most likely influence you to start doing the same – this will have a negative influence on your development. On the other hand, if you mix with people who don’t swear, it won’t influence you to start doing so either – a positive influence on your development.
Socio-economic factors also have influences on our development. Examples of them are the environment we live in, friends and peer pressure, and income. The environment we live in affects our development because if you lived on an estate, you would have more of a chance of meeting and mixing with other people rather than if you lived in a big house which is settled in an isolated area. This would affect childhood the most due to the fact that is where you start to mix with others and create friendships. Friends and peer pressure affect us because they can influence the decisions you make, can even pressure you into doing something you don’t want to do – for example, in adolescence depending on your secondary socialisation you may mix with
