The positive aspects about Reconstruction period is that it restores the Southern States into the Union and redefine the African American’s place in American history. It all started when President Abraham Lincoln began planning for the reunification of the United States. He turned the Unionist support into the Confederate states. Then, he allowed Southerners to take the path of allegiance. With the ten percent of the state’s vote, Unionists will be able to establish a government. Then, he created the Emancipation Proclamation that is for the abolition of slavery. Therefore, Congress passed the Thirteenth Amendment on January 31,1865 that legally abolished the slavery. Then, by the end of that year, four million of blacks became free. Although it was good for them, there are also some bad aspects of the Reconstruction period. On April 14, 1865, John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln during the performance of “Our American Cousin”. After Lincoln’s death, Vice President Andrew Johnson took over. He restored the Southern States into the Union. Then, they passed the law, which is known as the Black Codes that gave them right to own property, to marry, and to make contracts. But, the Black Codes are also bad. The law required them to carry a paper for employment. If they don’t have one, they could get arrested and be fined. Therefore, the famous women Elizabeth Cady Stanton led many women supporters to change their roles in the nation. On May 10, 1866, the Eleventh National Women’s Right Convention met in New York City to discuss about the social changes. The tensions of the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendment cause conflicting views in the movement because the amendment introduced the word “male” into the Constitution for the first time and did not include “women” in it as it gave women unequal status.
