The treaty stated that Germany should claim full responsibility for the war, pay money for the war damages, limit the size of its military, and furthermore, give away part of its land. The German delegates were forced to sign it infuriating the Germans. Adolf Hitler, a German politician, claimed that he would make Germany a better place and defeat the Allies. All the Germans saw him as a ray of hope and stood behind him. Hitler began to rebuild Germany's army defying the Treaty of Versailles. He also sent armies to occupy Austria, and as he predicted, the European democracies did not respond. Later in July, Truman learned about a secret weapon, the atomic bomb, made in Manhattan, and tested in a desert in New Mexico. The atomic bomb was so powerful that it could destroy an entire city in a matter of few minutes. On August 6, 1945, America dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, a city in Japan, causing a destruction never seen before. Within minutes, the whole city was destroyed and more than 130,000 people were killed. Even the horrific bombing of Hiroshima failed to convince Japan to surrender, thereby leading America to drop a more powerful atomic bomb on Nagasaki, another city in Japan. About 35,000 thousand people were immediately killed, and many more people in both cities died slow deaths due to radiation poisoning.
