Who Dropped The Atomic Bomb
On May 7, 1945 Germany surrenders, and as Germany falls Hitler committed suicide thus ending the war in Europe. Several months later and after many American deaths President Truman decides to drop atomic bombs on Japan. According to Joel Wooton the first bomb known as “little boy” was dropped August 6, 1945 on Hiroshima, Japan. “Hiroshima, Japan was chosen to be bombed because it was the only city out of the 7 they had saved to bomb that one wasn’t under a lot of cloud cover.” (Wooton) They dropped the bomb out of a B-29 bomber named (Enola Gay) after the piolets mom. The problem that had grown was who could get nuclear control, and who could develop new technologies quicker. It was also a time of trying to stop the spread of communism. This was known as the cold war and its effects are still seen in people to this day.
After the war the US continued their buildup of arms, and followed “Truman’s recommendation that the country use military force to ‘contain’ communist expansionism anywhere it seemed to be occurring.”(History.com) This led to the US spending four times as much on defense as the previous year.
This led to the arms race between Soviets and United States in 1949. Also that same year the USSR tried out their own atomic bomb and was successful. Following this the United States needed to build a bigger and better bomb so they developed the hydrogen bomb. A hydrogen bomb is a hydrogen particle being inserted into a ball of plutonium at the right point in time causing it to explode outward, and vaporize anything in its path. Not all nuclear weapons have the same design stated Eric Schlosser. Some use a fission reaction to set them off while others use a fission and fusion reaction.
