Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Poverty is the worst form of violence” he wanted to raise awareness for the struggles of poverty. Millions are suffering, to this day, from this heartbreaking epidemic. The real problem lies in the fact that poverty can be eradicated, by putting our minds and resources towards this cause. The number of those in poverty has been increasing every year. Poverty is something that is affecting every country in the world, no matter how big or small, rich or poor. Eradicating poverty should be the top priority of the United Nations in the 21st century.
I moved to America at a young age and I have always grown in the luxuries of America; advanced technology to a plethora of resources that are available. So why am I so concerned about the poverty in the world? The reason is my father and his childhood life. I had become concerned in the struggles of poverty from my father; he would sit with me and tell me stories of his upbringing and the struggles he faced as a child. My father grew up in the slums of small town in South India. His parents struggled to keep food on the table. My grandfather was an electrician paid well below minimum wage and my grandmother was a “hand” at a local rice mill. Her wage for a days work was literally a handful of rice kernels. He would speak of the times where he would go to sleep hungry because there was no food. It always amused him when I throw away a pencil when the eraser or the lead ran out and then drift into telling me or my sister that he had one pencil per semester and if he lost it he would have to borrow from his friends. It was from him and his lessons I learned to treat even the little things I posses with respect.
I began to get involved in numerous community volunteering mainly because I wanted to help the needy. I volunteered in several community
