African leaders are self-aggrandizers and self-perpetuators who subvert and debauch every key institution of government to serve their needs and not that of their people. As a result, this creates an imbalance in society and leads to more poverty because influential and powerful individuals end up oppressing the poor. On the other hand, when a household is affected by diseases as prevalent in Africa as malaria, HIV/AIDS, and TB, the little resources are spent on treating the sick. In a worst-case scenario where the breadwinner dies, those who are left behind have no resources to support themselves, thus leading a poor lifestyle. And the situation is worsened by poor health facilities.
