Poverty In The Outsiders

In the book The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton, the author highlights the struggles of growing up in poverty while also in battle with a rival group, the Socs. The main character Ponyboy Curtis belongs to a gang named the Greasers. The Greasers and Socials are mainly divided by their socioeconomic status. After Ponyboy and fellow gang member Johnny are jumped by a group of socials, resulting in one Soc being stabbed and killed by Johnny in self-defense, Johnny and Ponyboy go into hiding. After a week, a boy in their gang named Dally comes to the church they were hiding at and takes them out to Dairy Queen, but when they return to the church it’s on fire. The boys all rush in to save children that had been on a school picnic, resulting in Ponyboy
