Power In One Of These Days By Gabriel Garcia Marquez
There are many definitions of the word power, but Merriam Webster dictionary provides the best explanation of what the dentist does in “One of these days” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The Merriam Webster dictionary defines power as the ability to produce an effect on someone or something. The story “One of theses days” is a story about a dentist not wanting to work on a corrupt mayor but being forced to work on him. While working on his mouth the dentist uses this opportunity to hurt the mayor as a sort of revenge for the mayor being corrupt and hurting people the dentist cares about. The dentist in “One of these days” uses his power to produce an effect of pain on the mayor to make the mayor feel the pain that he has caused the dentist those
he cares about. In the story the dentist roughly handles the mayor’s mouth when he is working on page 5 in the story it says “ The dentist spread his feet and grasped the tooth with the hot forceps the mayor seized the arms of the chair and braced his feet with all his strength” (Marquez). The dentist does this to make the point that he may have to work on the mayor but doesn’t have handle him with care. The dentist is using his power to produce an effect of pain by not handling handling the mayor’s mouth with care which is not what a normal dentist would do. On page 5 it also says “ Without rancor, rather with a bitter tenderness he said now you’ll pay for our twenty dead men” (Marquez). Here we get more context of why the dentist is using his power on the mayor this way the mayor has either killed or involved with the killing of the twenty men that the dentist cared about. The mayor feels so much pain to the point he starts crying and feeling his bones break in his mouth it says this on page 5 as well “The Mayor felt the crunch of bones in his jaw and his eyes filled with tears he was trembling” (Marquez). By the mayor reacting this way in the story proves that the dentist uses his power to produce an effect of pain on the mayor for hurting those that he cares about.
