Power of Talk: Who Gets Heard and Why
The Power of Talk: Who Gets Heard and Why
Summary ( by Deborah Tannen . 2001 .)

There is no particular way to communicate according the Deborah Tannen as communication is not just saying what you mean but how one communicates the meaning. Situation varies from one person to another. Language communicates ideas but a more powerful form of communication is social behavior . Language use is a learnt social behavior that allows us to negotiate relationships and it is influenced by cultural experience . How we talk and express ourselves may be interpreted differently in other cultures and members of the opposite gender . Deborah Tannen a linguist from Georgetown University did a research on the influence of linguistic style on conversations and human relationships and found that how we learn to speak as children affects our judgment of competence and confidence plus whether we get heard in a discussion later on in adulthood . She found that man and woman communicate differently and just like cross cultural communication, misunderstanding can occur. Women according to her research were often over looked when it came to opportunities for promotion because of their lack of self confidence as seen by their male bosses. But women, as Tannen proves have grown up in a different environment to their male colleagues and have learnt to communicate differently to men . This has sometimes been interpreted as being less competent and less confident . An understanding of these differences could lead to better and fairer working environment for both men and women .
As children, girls and boys play differently. Girls are more likely to learn how to develop a sympathetic relationship with others and focus on common goals rather than differences. Girls tend to balances their needs with those of others to avoid seeming over confident or bossy . Boys are more likely to learn how to develop their status in society by playing in large groups of boys whose leadership roles are defined .

Many parents teach their children about the certain stereotypes that are tied to specific genders. This ideology is taught at home, interaction with other people at school, and lastly, the media. This is why a girl will feel more comfortable interacting with other girls at home. It just seems like the right thing to do. If a child is taught that boys are better at certain subjects, the response could possibly be failure, which would be influenced by that stereotype. A child’s development is also influenced by their natural response to certain…

Also there is another way to communicate for example In the united states many people feel that speaking directly is proper and masculine, while indirectness is viewed as weak and feminine. According to Tannen her article, “his politeness is her powerlessness”, Entire cultures operate on elaborate system of indirectness”. There is not an exactly way to speak. Therefore there is a domination of boys in physical and academic subject and girl’s domination in creative non-academic subjects. This may be because of stereotypes such as girls are expected to do creative subjects such as food technology to teach them cooking and boys to be the academic one that does technical, physical subjects. Children tend to therefore more confident in subject that there gender dominates as they engage to these subjects more. This means gender domination as there family members reflect this and they have the same expectation to follow this. Also there are tasks that tend to be abstract and teaching styles formal, with few opportunities for group work which girls tend to favour.…

As they grow, boys are encouraged to play with trucks, action figures and guns to promote strength and power. Whereas, girls are encouraged to play with dolls, cook with toy stoves, and play house to promote nurturing. As the child grows into adolescence, this is reinforced in the chores delegated to them. Boys are expected to cut the grass, take out the trash, and help out with any other “handyman” jobs. Girls are expected to wash dishes, do the laundry, sweep and mop floors. The way a language is used by a person to speak to one another is all that matters; they pick out their ways for a specific activity or purpose. For instance, Macaulay states that “Both men and woman will use the forms if language, registers, and styles appropriate to the activities in which they are engaged” (309). Notably, women at their natural state are straight forward to the point which they want to express; they talk in a simple manner and in some cases, they raise their voice in order to convince someone effectively. In contrast, men have a creative mind in their language usage. They always seek for new things to apply in their speech, and their manner goes along with toughness (solid voice) as in the example “Adult males on average have deeper voices than adult females because the vibrating part of the vocal cords is about a third longer in men” (Macaulay, 311). Depending on different activities, a person of either gender has to pick out an effective language usage which best suits the situation that they find themselves involving in. Otherwise, people will criticize the way you talk, whether it is professional or not.…

There are many factors outside the school education system that have affected gender differences in school. Firstly it can be said that parents expect more from their children to be hardworking, have responsible over their actions and behaviour towards others, to be tidy and neat. This is known as Parental Aspiration. Compared to girls, boys are more Laddish behaved which leads them to disrespect teachers in schools. Furthermore peer pressure can also affect gender difference in school; this is suggested in some case where boys impress their friends by acting like a “Cool” person, in the end not paying attention in class or to their studies. Whereas most girls are more likely to achieve better in their studies, this is more likely they stay away bad influenced people. According to Francis (2000) “boys no longer likely to consider themselves more able than girls”, this is considered to the subject choices that boys undertake, which do not require academic success, however girls think more realistic which do require academic success such as becoming an Engineer or a teacher, this makes them seem to work harder in school’s to go to University and to pursue the profession job.…
