There Is a Rigth Way to Speak?
In our society there are many ways to speak either correctly or incorrectly. This is where there is a big misunderstanding, because of many people that came from different countries and they bring up new ways to communicate. I believe that we live in a world with many different cultures; to say that there is a right way to speak cannot apply to everyone universally.
In Kingston story we can see that the girl with a different culture comes to a American school and she spent three years without saying a word, because she don’t know how to speak English and silence was her only friend .she was afraid of coming a victim of other because of her absent. She was a girl that is still finding herself in a place where silence is not acceptable. However When she got to a Chinese school everything changed and the people that were in silent before were loud, she felt at home and more comfortable because she could understand everything better.
Also there is another way to communicate for example In the united states many people feel that speaking directly is proper and masculine, while indirectness is viewed as weak and feminine. According to Tannen her article, “his politeness is her powerlessness”, Entire cultures operate on elaborate system of indirectness”. There is not an exactly way to speak. I believe that it is not everyone else speaks, but how you speak: this is what truly matters and no one should be able to change that.

Struggle to Be an All-American Girl starts out with Elizabeth Wong describing a school. She tells about both her brother and her dreaded going to her Chinese school and the different atmospheres of the two schools. The Chinese school was like a dusty old chest and the other was like the box that a new pair of shoes came in. Both held treasures but she was far more interested in the new than what she felt to be old. While the Chinese school focused mainly on language, she points out that every day started with a lesson in politeness. To Wong the language was rough and without beauty. Shetells us of her grandmother’s way of speaking and how it was embarrassing to her. She didn’t want to be thought of as talking nonsense, hurried gibberish. Her brother seemed to feel the same way and he was very hard on his mother. He would constantly correct her even if she was in the middle of talking and if he messed up it was blamed on her. Wong reflects on her departure from that school, portraying it as an escape. She had multiple cultures influence her life but she was most proud that she was not a Chinese person but an American. The last sentence reveals that she regrets this.…
