POPularized: Society’s Reception to Pop and Jazz Pop music and jazz music are two different worlds. They cannot be compared to each other, as it would be like comparing a magazine to a novel. Everywhere, pop music is prevalent. It is heard on the radio, in shops, in parties, and other places. People sing pop songs all the time. We can say that contemporary pop music from artists like Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, One Direction, Adele, Chris Brown, and the like(mainly Top 40 artists), attracts more attention than jazz music in our society today due to pop music’s predictability, catchy lyrics, simple song structures and time signature; contrary to a great number of jazz songs that have complicated time signatures and structures, and the syncopation of rhythms. Pop is the most accessible musical genre. Almost all of the contemporary pop songs use a 4/4 time signature, which is the most basic time signature in music.
