A documentary “Pray the Devil Back to Hell” is an hour and twelve minutes long and was released in 2008, directed by Gini Reticker. From the title, I assumed this film would be related to a peace and war, and it is a story about how Liberian women came together to end a bloody civil war and bring unimaginable peace to their country. When it comes to a debate of war, negotiation, and peace, people think men often dominate. Moreover, only one woman in the history won the Nobel Peace Prize until three women won it with fighting for women’s rights and helped make peace in a war in Liberia. One of them is Leymah Gbowee who is an activist and tells us a powerful and inspiring story of the Liberian women. She saw people suffering and their pain from the war, and at this moment she got baptized into the women’s movement. As she helped them, to sit and hold their hands, and to hug their children, she realized that she has the potential power to change their lives and the world.
Thousands of women—mothers, grandmothers, daughters, both Christian and Muslin—gathered together to pray for peace.
We’re just one person. How can anything we do matter? Despite the horrific subject of war, the uplifting documentary shows optimism. The women achieve something incredible. Gbowee wants to bring an end to the Liberian conflict. Also, she advocates for peace and the empowerment of women. She believed in strength and perseverance of the women of Liberia. Grassroots activism can alter the history of a nation. She said, “If we had not had different women from different walks of life, banding together, we may not have been able to solve the problem.” We need to rise up and rise above the politics that so deeply divide us as women.
