Preconceived Opinions In Raymond Carver's Cathedral
In Raymond Carver's "Cathedral", the narrator has composed an opinion solely on rumors and speculation. Before forming an opinion on something or someone people need to seek further information and consider other perspectives in order to construct a final decision. An opinion should not be based on generalized information because preconceived notions can be dangerous and have many negative consequences.
Throughout life, people receive many stories, rumors, etc that can only show the positives to a certain idea or a concept. Stories people create and secondary information about a good idea is perceived to boast only positive benefits, but have no drawbacks or negative side effects. One prime example is the automotive company that is Tesla Motors and their electric cars. The intent of Tesla as a company is to eliminate gasoline-powered cars and focus on manufacturing electric cars for the mass population. Many articles have been written on the benefits of electric cars from Tesla Motor Company such as significantly reduced Co2 emissions, more efficient power delivery, and the latest in technological advances.

Dieting is extremely popular for those who want to lose weight or maintain a certain weight while keeping their bodies toned. Many of these people focus on doing things that may actually harm a person's body instead of help it. Examples of these are skipping meals, over eating healthy fruits and vegetables, excessive exercising and so on. "Research shows that people who skip breakfast are more often overweight than those who don’t skip this important meal." (Weiss) The idea of less food equaling less weight is a concept heard from places like television and magazines that like to stretch the truth as well as sell products such as Nutrisystem. Starting your day without any energy even if it is slightly unhealthy is better than having none at

Raymond Carver, Jr. was an American short story author and poet. He was born in 1938 and died in 1988. He was married twice, struggled with drugs and alcoholism, and was an unsuccessful writer early on in his career. It was not until his publication of “Cathedral” that he gained success. Carver even believed that “Cathedral was a watershed in his career, in its shift towards a more optimistic and confidently poetic style” (Arciniegas). “Cathedral” starts out slow, spending most of the short story on the back story of the narrator’s wife and a blind man. The story progresses with the three characters doing mostly everyday things, eating, talking, and drinking. While this happens, the narrator’s ideas of the blind are challenged little by…

As I begin to read “Cathedral” by Raymond Carver, I cannot comprehend what is going on. The story starts off with a husband named Robert telling the reader about “this” (par.1.) blind man who has been long term friends with his wife and will be coming to visit due to the tragic death of the blind man’s wife. Through the way that this man speaks of the blind person gives the appearance that the husband is not very fond of this person or any blind person. Robert seems very careless and judgmental. As stories of Robert’s wives past with the blind man are told to him, he acts as though he couldn’t care less.…

In the Cathedral by Raymond Carver we read, the wife said, “a blind man in my house was not something I looked forward to.” (Raymond Carver, the Cathedral) This statement above is the perfect embodiment of a completely dysfunctional relationship. This statement clearly illustrates a dying relationship between the two. In the Cathedral Carver majestically brought the story to life by portraying two working class individuals struggling with every day’s challenges.…

The narrator of Cathedral is many things; jealous, sarcastic, insensitive, inconsiderate, and overall just a bad person, he is also, surprisingly, a sympathetic character. While he exuberates many flaws and emotions that we do not readily show ourselves, this does not strike the fact that we can sympathise and relate to the narrator. In fact, it is the fact that he shows all of these flaws that make him a sympathetic character. The reason being is that he shows the emotions and flaws that humans, as a whole, want to show in any given situation, but choose not to out of compassion. Even though we do not react the same way the narrator would, it does not change the fact that often times we do feel like reacting in a similar manner that he would.…

In the short story “Cathedral,” by Raymond Carver, the narrator draws a cathedral with his blind guest and transforms from a narrow-minded, materialistic, and superficial individual to an individual who acknowledges the spiritual aspects of life and the lives of those around him. Before the egoist narrator meets the blind man, Bub is so closed-minded, jealous, and materialistic that he does not want to help someone in need and he does not empathize with the hardships others endure. However, after Bub communicates with Robert and engineers an emotional connection, he is no longer limited by his former characteristics. Through this emotional link, Robert assists Bub in opening his mind to the spiritual world and feeling empathy for others.…

Raymond Carvers Cathedral illustrates the point of view of a self-centered man, the narrator, who suffers from a mild lack of education and culture while being more than slightly close-minded and rude. These are observations that one can make by considering how he reacts to his wifes blind friend, Robert coming over at their house as well as by his perceptions of the blind man. The fact that the main character is also narrating helps as well when trying to capture his nature since we have access to his every thought. His unease towards the blind man appears under various forms throughout the short story but it also fades as the husband starts to ask more sincere questions to the blind man, as he takes a greater interest in him. At the end, the man realizes something, or more precisely, the blind man makes him understand something. For that reason, we can affirm that Carvers Cathedral is a story about the blind leading the blind for ignorance is a sort of blindness as it isolates one from the rest of the world and others emotions.…

The short story “Cathedral” is an intriguing piece of writing written by Raymond Carver. In this story, the author created a character, the narrator, as a person that lacked warmth or emotional involvement, even with his own wife. The blind man is portrayed as a human being with a love for life. He has a human connection towards the narrator’s wife whereby he fully understands her emotions and supports her needs. My essay will explore the use of setting in this short story. My thesis will focus on the use of location, time, and social conditions. Carver validates the theme of human connection and understanding using the three types of settings mentioned. The literary techniques captured in the short story are symbolism and setting. Stereotype is a symbol of ignorance and is demonstrated in the story when the narrator refers to the blind man as “someone…

Everything given to a person in life is a blessing, and a person has the opportunity to choose whether they want to appreciate what has been given to them or not. A blessing can be small or large, whether it be a house to live in, a car to drive in, or even eyes to see. In the short story “Cathedral” by Raymond Carver, the narrator is unappreciative towards everything he has in his life including his wife. His wife invites an old friend who shares an emotional connection with her which the narrator and wife do not share, to spend the night. The narrator becomes skeptical about Robert spending the night, especially after finding out that the man is blind. During the blind man’s visit, the narrator learns a valuable lesson. This story shares a strong message of relationships which breaks down to intimacy, jealousy, communication and acceptance. It started in the beginning of the story with the invitation of Robert to spend the night, showing the intimacy and jealousy, leading to the symbolism of the audio tapes representing communication, and ending with the symbolism of the drawing of the…

In life people demonstrate many characteristics which make that person who they are; while these characteristics define the actions made by people, they also help others to determine why such actions were made, while also characterize them for what that person has done or will do. In today’s society certain characteristics are viewed in a negative light due to the changing ways of everyday life and increasing deviation of traditional American views to ones of a more liberal nature. In “Cathedral” Raymond Carver writes of a man who is addicted to drugs and alcohol, which creates psychological distance from the narrator, his wife, and the blind man. This is caused by the narrators need to escape reality and enjoy a world that is not his own.…
