Prejudice and discrimination, has been around a lot longer than the 19th and 20th centuries. It can be traced back to the complex history of Western Europe and the United States.

Thomas Jefferson also believed that race had a biological and a social hierarchy. Jefferson, who later became president, was influential in promoting the idea that whites are superior and blacks are inferior.
