The need for preparation cannot be over-emphasized. Jesus said not all who call Him Lord, Lord, will enter the Kingdom of heaven but only those that does the will of His Father. It’s definitely not enough to go to church every Sunday or be a Christian by name only. Saying the sinner’s prayer is the beginning of the journey not the end of it and we must follow Christ on a daily basis. In the parable of the Ten Virgins, only 50% of them were ready at the coming of the Bridegroom and this indicate that many will not be ready when Jesus appears. First of all, they were all virgins, meaning they were all believers. The foolish took their lamps but took no oil with the lamp while the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. So the key differentiator is the oil. I grew up as child in the village where there was no electricity. The only means of lighting for the house is the use of portable lamps that use kerosene as fuel. Once the fuel is exhausted, the lamp goes out. Before we go to bed at night, we check the lamps to be sure there is enough fuel to keep them burning till morning, otherwise you wake up in the night to find total darkness because the lamps had gone out for lack of fuel. This is the type of lamp Jesus was referring to in this parable. It is the oil that keeps the lamp burning and shining. It is obvious that the condition for being admitted to the wedding feast was to have their lamps shining. The word of God is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. Walking in obedience to the word of God and living godly lives will be the key differentiator between the wise and the foolish. Jesus compared those that obey His word to a wise man that dug deep into the ground and laid the foundation of his house on the rock. When the rain descended in torrents and the winds blew against that house, it did not collapse. And anyone who hears the word but did not obey is compared to a foolish man who laid the foundation of his house on sinking sand of human ideology and self.
