Presidential Character
One of the subjects in political psychology is Presidential character. Author James D. Barber in his book The Presidential Character (1972) uses psychobiography to explain the personalities, style, and “character” of the modern presidents while attempting to avoid the Freudian psychoanalytical focus on the concepts of ego and superego (Cottam p25). The typology used by Barber to distinguish presidential character is one of the most well-known and widely used in political psychology. Presidential character was later given an additional perspective in the article written by Michael Lyons titled “Presidential Character Revisited”. The article written by Lyons concluded with an all-embracing Myers-Briggs Type Indicator

Character is seen as the way a president “orients” himself toward life and his own merits. Barber uses a pschobiographical approach to trace the sociological development within presidents using the three components of personality from their early lives through their first independent political successes. The first political success is pattern setting. It gives the leader a model of successful action and positive feedback (Barber p5).
Barbers typology discuses presidential character or the basic stance a man takes toward his presidential experience as reflected on two basic dimensions (1) the energy and effort he puts into the job active or passive (2) the personal satisfaction he derives from his presidential duties positive or negative (Cottam p27). When Barbers typology is applied it leads to generalized predictions of behavior and style in

Lyons relied on David Maraniss 's First in His Class (1995) greatly when it came to determining Clintons MBTI. His MBTI predictions were extroversion, intuitiveness, feeling, and perceiving. In sum, Clinton appears to be an ENFP type, and decisively so on all four scales. The MBTI literature offers several predictions about the ENFP personality. Some of the information from the predictions the most central prediction which is, ENFP types seek close attachments to other people, and they are very adept at establishing such attachments. ENFP types tend to be disorganized and indecisive. The disorganized and undisciplined character of the Clinton White House, during the first year at least has already become legendary. (Lyons

In the Michael Nelsons critique of James David Barber and the Psychological Presidency, he discusses important concepts from Barber’s book The Presidential Character. During his critique he explains that Barber cites a study of network evening news coverage of the 1972 election campaign which found that almost as much time was devoted to the polls, strategies, rallies, and other “horse-race” elements of the election as to the candidate’s personal qualifications and issue stands combined.…

Raymond Shaw, fighting in the Korean War when his troop is ambushed by the Chinese as a result of an oriental translator convincing them to cross in a single line. Raymond Shaw and his troop are air lifted to a POW camp where they are the centre of a brainwashing program funded by Soviet and Chinese brass. Sgt. Shaw receives hypnotic suggestions to murder two of his troop members, the other men are not able to react as they are in a similar trance. They are all returned to the States with absolutely no recollection of what had took place, further more, the troop members "remember" Sgt. Shaw as a hero who had ultimately saved them while fighting in Korea. Sgt. Shaw receives a medal for his "bravery", soon realizing that his mother has organized this three ring circus as good publicity for his step father - Senator John Iselin. Many of the troop members begin to get terrible nightmares that reveal images of what really transpired while being held captive. Robotically, Raymond begins dealing from a deck. When he turns up the Queen of Diamonds during the card game, it unlocks or activates the key to his brainwashed mind and opens him up to obey any suggestion. Sgt. Shaw is asked to come in for a…

A leader who holds the capacity to simultaneously transform society and maintain a fabled reputation, is one who not only holds themselves, but also their followers to a higher standard of truth, ambition, and morality. The 40th president of the United States, Ronald Reagan adequately embodied the qualities of principality leader and was greatly favored by his followers. He started a revolution of reconstructing America and he influenced people to maintain an ambitious drive. “Be not afraid of greatness; some are born great, some achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon them.” As playwright and poet William Shakespeare states, greatness is something that comes naturally to some, while others must put much effort in to achieve it, and others are forced into it. When examining the United States presidency, much effort must be put into identifying if a president was great and how the president rates compared to previous presidents. For example, political scientist Fred Greenstein (2005) describes six qualities that shape a president’s performance, such as emotional intelligence and political skill, and Joseph A. Pika and John Maltese (2004) add other elements, such as personal character and career, that shape a president’s performance. Besides examining the president on his personal strengths and weaknesses, Stephen Skowroneck (2003) states that it is also vital to evaluate what time period the president held office in, if the country was resilient or not at that time, and if the president supported the previous presidency. When evaluating if our current president, Barack Obama, will be remembered as a great president, using the above criteria and observation methods as well as comparing him to past presidents is vital. President Obama’s approval rating is currently 42% (Gallup.com), with citizens mostly angry about the country’s economic situation. However, with his use of new media and strong interpersonal skills, President Obama’s 2008 campaign and subsequent presidency has given Americans the most personal experience of any campaign and presidency to date. In addition, as the first African American president to hold the office, the historical significance of his presidency is enormous. Ultimately, despite the failures president Obama has experienced thus far in his presidency, President Obama’s campaign and presidency was so revolutionary that it will be remembered as great.…

The election of 1980 was a key turning point in American politics. To present day, American’s still have strong feelings and opinions about their former President, Jimmy Carter. The result from the 1980 election, led to the appointment of Ronald Reagan as the 40th President of the United States of America, and the Republicans gained control of the Senate for the first time in twenty-five years. There are several reasons behind the animosity of American’s towards Jimmy Carter at the time and in present day. Ronald Reagan and the Republican Party were preferred over President Carter and the Democratic Party due to international and domestic issues that were occurring at the time of the 1980 election. The international issues were centred round the Iran Hostage situation, the Panama Canal Treaties and President Carter’s actions towards the Soviet Government. On the home front, the President was under scrutiny by the public due to his political pardons and his handling of the economy including high inflation rates and high unemployment. President Carter was also under scrutiny from conservative political and religious groups as to his ‘liberal’ policies that he had enacted during his term in office. In addition to the previous mentioned topics, the personality traits of Jimmy Carter were also examined during the 1980 election.…

Our personality is our characteristic pattern of thinking, feeling and acting (Psychology David G Myers), it’s the combination of traits that ‘outlines the doctrine of uniqueness’ (Gifts Differing – Understanding Personality Types) that sets us apart from everyone else. Psychologists vary between themselves concerning the meaning of personality. Most would agree that it originated from the Latin word persona’ – meaning a theoretical mask – but they differ on how an individual obtains this ‘unique mask’ (i.e. how they develop their personality) and thus this brings the divers theories of personality. This essay will compare and contrast two popular theories: one being the: Psychoanalytic theory, and the other a Humanistic approach.…

They lack experience, and flexibility to perform effectively as political leaders. They always tend to want to withdrawal, escape from conflict and uncertainty through procedural arrangements.
