Presidential Debate
The first presidential debate took place on Monday, September 26th at Hofstra University, New York. This time, being described as two of the least-liked candidates, democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump finally came face-to-face and launched the campaign into a new stage.
Having his first experience moderating a presidential debate on Monday, NBC “Nightly News” anchor Lester Holt chose three major subjects of the debate, which were “America’s Direction,” “Achieving Prosperity,” and “Securing America.” The questions were asked expertly, relating to some crucial problems that the nation currently faces and citizens are concerning about. Holt, registered as a Republican, remained mainly unbiased during the debate, except the time

She made it clear that she advocated for supporting small business and improving innovation and technology. What’s more, instead of trying to win over people in the far right, Clinton targeted the independents. She elevated her moral high up and elaborated her beliefs by emphasizing how nine million lost their jobs, how five million people lost their homes, and how thirteen trillion dollars in family wealth was wiped out. In this way, Clinton readily won the women independents in this debate, driving them to believe that the nation should never go back to the abyss again. Furthermore, Clinton spoke from her own experience. Having worked in the Senate and held the position as Secretary of State, Clinton illustrated herself as competent for president by giving sufficient evidence of how she had contributed to the government previously. She described that Iran had prepared enough nuclear material to form a bomb right after she took office. The U.S. government sanctioned the terrorists as Clinton herself voted for every sanction against Iran. She also mentioned herself spending one and a half year putting together a coalition including Russia and China to impose the sanction on Iran. Through talking about her own challenges and success she had achieved, Hillary Clinton convinced the audience and displayed her

1976 was the first time in the United States history where presidential candidates would debate head to head, sharing the stage and increasing competition. Gerald Ford was expected to come ahead, but his opponent Jimmy Carter was perceived as confident and a fierce contender. Many argue that Gerald Ford’s downfall was due to the pardon of President Nixon, while others thought he faltered during the live broadcasted debate in San Francisco, with his response to his “international policy leadership.” (CNN Time) Nevertheless, come election day, Jimmy Carter was the new Commander in Chief. Although their rivalry was aggressive, the two stayed friends and worked closely on many national matters, such as “the Panama Canal treaties, nuclear armaments control with the Soviet Union and the Camp David accords.” (Carter) President Carter spoke at Ford’s funeral and Carter’s speech is a great example of how a speaker can convey condolence and affection for a worth adversary and friend.…

debate. During the debate Kennedy wore a dark suit; however, Nixon wore a light suit and a collar that was too big for him. Kennedy was a junior senator, but Nixon was vice president for 8 years under president Eisenhour’s term. Kennedy’s actions proved him to be confident and self-aware rather than Nixon being sweaty and tired. There were many differences between the two candidates, but they had their similarities. For example, they both had political experience, both eventually became president, and both finished the first televised presidential debate. That debate was historical and an important part of shaping the United States today.…

The entire spectacle appears to be a disingenuous attempt by the media to have even legitimate grievances about the debate formats. Because these are not really debates, in the sense that they don’t allow candidates to fully articulate positions, but rather to deflect and defend themselves while attacking opponents’ positions. Reasoned arguments are nearly impossible with eleven people on a single stage, each one trying to stand out from the others. These debates are spectacles, entertainment for the masses and nothing more than excuses for partisans to do…

Through the first presidential debate, Hillary Clinton has proved that she is the best choice for President. First, she proved that she is more empathetic to the common American. She herself came from a middle-class family. During the debate, she preached about her hardworking father, who worked in drapery. Trump came from a wealthy family, so he cannot relate to average Americans as well as Clinton can. She then expressed her desire for tax cuts for the middle class, and tax increases for the rich. She also mentioned how she intends to create 10 million jobs by investing in industries such as “clean energy”. She proved that she will do her best to make everyday life better for them. Next, she behaved more professionally then her opponent,…

debates have occurred regularly and are becoming institutionalized as a practice in American elections. Third-party candidates have fewer chances to join presidential debates, especially if the two major party candidates do not agree to debate them. Unless it becomes in the interest of both parties to have a third-party candidate debate, as it was in 1992 with Ross Perot, it will be very difficult for third-party candidates to become a part of the presidential debates. Even though third parties have debated each other in presidential election years, the fate of third parties in receiving national coverage or joining the two major party candidates in presidential debates is uncertain. It is also unclear how much effect debates have on American…

The Democratic Debate was really good. I honestly enjoyed watching it time just flew by. After it ended I just wanted to keep watching more. It was so refreshing hearing people talk about the real issues in this country, like the economy, healthcare, education, and corruption. Unlike the Republican Debate which mostly focused on Planned Parenthood, Donald Trump, and Iran.…

    Clinton's Dnc Speech

Clinton instantly dives in by pointing out the major flaw in politics: the fighting between parties. “Through my foundation, in America and around the world, I work with Democrats, Republicans and Independents who are focused on solving problems and seizing opportunities, not fighting with each other.” (Clinton 1) “Though I often disagree with Republicans, I never learned to hate them the way the far right that now controls their party seems to hate President Obama and the Democrats.” (Clinton 2) What Clinton does in this passage is put the constant fighting between parties in perspective. He has worked with Republicans before and after his presidency and gives credibility to the idea the compromising is possible. I think that in talking about how his foundation’s focus is “on solving problems and seizing opportunities, his is connecting to the everyday, average American who is tired of corruption and lack work being done by both sides. To further this argument he throws out a quote made by Reagan and even gets an applause for Bush by stating, “I worked with President George Hw.W. Bush on national education goals and am grateful to President George W. Bush for his efforts and work with PEPFAR” which is an organization…

During the third Presidential Debate both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump both have strong arguments and strong beliefs, but the way Clinton uses rhetorical appeal to catch the attention of her audience is outstanding. She is a career politician and is able to convey her points and views much more effectively than Donald Trump. The three main points that I find to be very interesting are abortion, gun laws and the tax cuts. All three of these topics are very hot topics, now do I agree with everything she says no but she has all the right arguments to win a debate. She keeps her calm better than Trump, that’s not to say she doesn’t show signs of breaking from frustration but compared to him she is much more experienced. Donald Trump sometimes comes off as an…

As Denise Graveline summarized, female politicians can be “competent or likable, but not both.” Graveline also looked at other female politicians who faced the same double bind as Clinton is currently facing. She recognized that Geraldine Ferraro, the first female vice presidential candidate “lacked the credibility of a male candidate [and thus] adopted a stronger, more masculine style that may have suited her less” (Chozick). In many ways this is exactly what Clinton strives to reconcile by adjusting the way she speaks in order to appease her audience. When Clinton tries to speak as she is expected to as a woman, she doesn’t fit with society's idea of a powerful candidate. Simultaneously, when she employs features frequently attributed to men’s rhetoric she marks her speech as even more abnormal and her authenticity is questioned (Gunn). Traditionally, a man’s worth is determined by his accomplishments in his professional life, while a woman’s worth is based on intrinsic qualities with which she was born (Eckert and McConnell Ginet). Under this belief, it makes some sense that some people would struggle to value Clinton’s worth as a politician as she is a woman and also a politician. This idea also suggests why critics focus on Clinton’s manners of speaking more than those of any male politicians; language is an intrinsic quality, and…
