Pretties By Scott Westerfeld
What would life be like if everyone was supermodel perfect? How would anyone stand out? In Pretties by Scott Westerfeld, Tally’s dreams come true and she is finally perfect, just like every other New Pretty. Now that she is beautiful, the next goal she must reach is to become a Crim. Zane, the leader of the Crims, and Tally start seeing each other, but soon find out that there is a way they wouldn’t have to be like all the others. They have to find a way to leave the city and save all their friends in the process without alarming the Wardens. Tally searches for love through her relationship with Zane, truth by finding out what happens to all the New Pretties, and Identity by trying to remember who she used to be before the operation. Being gorgeous in New Pretty Town means there are more opportunities to meet new, special people. Tally wasn’t really looking for a relationship yet (especially since Peris had warned her about falling for someone too fast at first) but that was before she met Zane. He wasn’t exactly thinking of having anything more than a friendship with her at first either, but it changed the first time they went out alone. “Reality was …show more content…
She was worried that it might not have done anything since she only had half a dose, but after she had a confrontation with Dr. Cable the resentment Tally has towards her recovers some of the seemingly expunged memories from before the operation. “Tally’s mind wasn’t going to fade away. She was not going to forget who she was (West 136). “ It seems that for Tally, harsh anger and high adrenaline flow are what finally pushed her to break through whatever mindset the operation had given her. She is finally able to recollect events from her past life as an ugly, and she is not about to give them up for anything. She now needs to figure out who she was before she became pretty. She isn’t about to let anyone get in her

From the very beginning of the story, being ‘Pretty’ is so amazing. Everyone older than 16 gets turned ‘Pretty’, and that is the average. If you are younger and ‘Ugly’, you are not important until you get the procedure. Westerfeld explains this through Tally’s thoughts, “Of course, Tally was nothing here. Worse, she was ugly. But she hoped Peris wouldn’t see it that way. Wouldn’t see her that way.” This line shows how it feels to be ‘Ugly’ around the ‘Pretties’, Tally feeling that as she breaks into a ‘Pretty’ party. She feels…

This book will teach the generations to come that if you want to be beautiful you’ll have to be a whole new person, a photo shopped fake. Today in advertisements and magazines we are presented with beautiful images of men and women, girls and boys. We are presented with fake pictures, imaginary pictures, something that will never happen, but we are totally fooled into believing that true beauty is what’s presented in magazines and advertisements. This book teaches us that our imperfections make us beautiful, that for beauty you lose your people, and you’ll regret it. The imagination of being perfect is told in someone else’s point of view. Our society is proven to believe that a person with a combination of qualities that pleases others is beautiful, but your imperfections are what make you beautiful. As Marilyn Monroe said “Imperfection is beauty. Madness is genius, and it’s better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.” Tally is taught in The Smoke, that alongside the surgery, “uglies” face tiny complications from the anaesthetic used in the operation, tiny lesions in the brain that were barely visible. These lesions were basically a…

We live in a country where television and advertisement is designed to entice people into always wanting more than what they already have. This enticement is achieved by feeding into the human desire for happiness. Advertisers create persuasive campaigns that inundate the public with images of societies narrow interpretation of success and beauty. These images are then presented as a precondition to the happiness that human beings are searching for. When a person’s reality does not match this narrow image, the message sent through television and advertisements is that in order to be content people need to find a way to acquire it. As a result we live in a society where people are continuously longing for a happiness that can only be achieved through things that are fleeting and external, which creates feelings of discontentment…

Although the concept of niceness is mentioned several times in the text, Carr uses this as justification for the destruction of personal identity as a direct effect of colonialism. Carr recognizes niceness is about being colonized, as native women must be ‘trained’ to conform to societal norms (Hyman, Jan 17/17). When Sophie is asked anything about her life or routine she simply replies, “nice ladies always do” as if the idea of being nice is expected of her (Carr, 56). Even when Sophie is allowed to touch the babies she mutters “nice ladies don’ touch Em’ly” as if she is not allowed because she cannot have one of her own (Carr, 65). The author works to make the character realize the injustice right in front of her and is almost successful.…
