However, life in the kingdom was far from perfect. An evil witch, angered by the king’s rejection of her, had placed a curse on Princess Emmaline: On the day she was to be presented into society, the curse would come into effect, and then she would then be plagued with the worst of luck for the rest of her life. Upon hearing this, the king closed the castle off to outsiders, attempting to protect his daughter from the effects of the curse. He tried his best to make her happy through other means: all the books she wanted, all the newest fashions, all the toys a young girl …show more content…
could wish for. Through this Princess Emmaline became a bit spoiled, but nobody blamed the king for such behavior under the circumstances.
One day, Emmaline found her father and asked him for the one thing he hadn’t gifted her yet: a friend. The king pondered how to do this for his young daughter, since friends are the one thing money cannot buy. He sent out his couriers throughout the kingdom to find his daughter a friend.
Quickly replies started coming in, but the king, wanting only the best for his little Emmaline, rejected all of them. If Princess Emmaline was to have a friend, she must be something special. He saw flaws in every noble daughter presented to him. A common peasant certainly wouldn’t do. Weeks passed, and the king continued to find even the smallest problems with each of them.
Finally, a courier brought a letter to the king. A girl had been found, once raised in the castle, but now living on the streets of the city. Named Rosalinn, she was kind, and charming, but what interested the king the most was her heritage. The girl was a fairy’s daughter, and was capable of bringing good fortune to those around her. Such ability might be able to protect the princess when the curse struck. The king ordered the girl brought to him.
When Rosalinn arrived at the castle and met Emmaline, it was an instant connection.
The two girls began to do everything together. Each day, the pair would go out and play hide and seek in the rose garden built for Princess Emmaline. The signs of Rosalinn’s magic were evident in the way flowers bloomed around her and birds sang as she passed, but the king saw none of the same effects on his daughter. Disappointed, he attempted to send Rosalinn away, but the spoiled Princess Emmaline refused to accept the loss of her new friend. So Rosalinn stayed.
The two girls grew older and older, and both grew fairer and fairer. Princess Emmaline was said to be the spitting image of her mother with golden curls and blue eyes, and Rosalinn’s green eyes and pointed ears became more dramatic and alluring. The curse was all but forgotten, and soon only her father worried about it. Eventually, despite her father’s worries and delays, it was time for Emmaline to be presented to society as a woman.
On the night of her debut ball, Rosalinn was with Emmaline when the princess suddenly collapsed. Rosalinn called the guards and attempted to revive Princess Emmaline with magic, but to no avail. The curse had struck in an unexpected way. Princess Emmaline had the unfortunate luck of being the first to contract a plague that soon spread throughout the
kingdom.
The physicians of the castle managed to keep the princess alive, but she was still slowly wasting away. Outside the walls, the kingdom was slowly being consumed by illness, and the once beautiful landscape began to shrivel up and die.
Rosalinn was incapable of sitting and watching her friend slowly die. She had tried everything she knew to save the princess, but nothing had helped. She knew there were no other magic wielders around, but she could find them in the north. So Rosalinn saddled up a horse and went riding off to find more fairies to help heal Princess Emmaline.
Rosalinn rode hard to find the fairies. Eventually, she heard of a fairy stronghold in the Adwen forest, and so she made her way there.
The evil witch had been watching the progress of her curse as it slowly destroyed the kingdom. Upon hearing that Rosalinn was searching for fairies to break the curse, the witch left her hut and set out for the Adwen forest to stop Rosalinn.
When Rosalinn reached the fairy stronghold, the fae refused to let her in. All the fae feared catching the plague, and had thus quarantined themselves.
Rosalinn refused to give up. For days she sat outside the gates, calling up to the guards in hopes that one would eventually let her in.
Eventually Rosalinn’s cries reached the fairy queen, and the queen came down to see the commotion. Upon seeing the young fairy-blooded girl outside her gates, she relented.
The queen called down to Rosalinn and told her that she could enter the stronghold if she first passed three tests. Eagerly, Rosalinn accepted. Instantly Rosalinn was taken to the first task.
Rosalinn was left deep in the woods and told to find her way back to the stronghold. Frustrated, and without any sense of the correct direction, Rosalinn set off. She walked for a while before feeling a sense of wrongness. After examining the feeling, she recognized it as her own magic, leading her back to the compound. Quickly she ran in the direction her magic told her, and almost collapsed in relief when she saw the fortress rise up above her.
The queen was startled, for she had not known of Rosalinn’s heritage before this, and had posed the task knowing only one with fairy blood could succeed. She begrudgingly set forth the second task for Rosalinn.
The second task required that Rosalinn make all the apple trees in the orchard bear fruit. At this daunting task, Rosalinn almost gave up. However, she slowly set about the task, approaching the first tree and attempting to make it bloom. Once she placed her hands on the first tree, she could feel something in the bark call to her. Sending her magic in, Rosalinn allowed the tree to take her energy and use it to bloom.
As her magic rushed through the ground, it quickly encompassed every tree in the orchard, and the trees blossomed beautifully, dropping shiny red apples all over the ground.
The queen became worried at this point. If Rosalinn passed the final test, the queen would be forced to allow her into the fortress to obtain a cure. She asked Rosalinn to wait for a day to receive the final test, and retreated to her quarters to consider her options.
About this time, the evil witch had reached the stronghold. Upon her arrival, she was immediately admitted, for she was sister to the fairy queen. The two deliberated together for a while, until the two finally came up with a plan to prevent Rosalinn from succeeding.
When Rosalinn returned the next day, the fairy queen was ready. The task she posed to Rosalinn was almost insurmountable, but Rosalinn was ready to accept it.
Find an object that represents your love for the Princess Emmaline, ordered the fairy queen, and bring it here to me. If your love is deemed not suitable, you will not be admitted.
Rosalinn pondered and pondered the queen’s order. By now, she had realized that the queen was trying to prevent her from entering with frivolous tests, but she saw no other way.
But what represents love?
