Last September 2012, my brother came to Singapore. Hence I spent most of the weekends with him. During our free time, he shared with me what he fathomed from his reading. Among that were his lessons about “Principles”.
My first lesson was that principles, which are invariant values and long-lasting, act as life compasses for anyone who wants to succeed. At first, the term “principles” seemed unfamiliar to me. Thus, my brother explained them with many examples and stories of successful men such as Bill Gates, Steve Jobs. What he tried to imply was that basic principles were there for successful person, but to succeed I had to find my own set of principles.
The concept of principles is complicating. Nevertheless, my brother’s talks had been a good kick-start for me to discover mine. Nowadays, listening to many ideas of success, I realized that principles themselves are simple, but how to apply it to individual case is another story. This makes me think that successful person needs not be the smart one, but the one who practices principles well and sticks to them no matter what. “The teacher who is indeed wise does not bid you to enter the house of his wisdom but rather leads you to the threshold of your mind.” Khalil Gibran said.
