Principle I of the NEA Code of Ethics of Education Profession states the Commitment to the Students. It lists eight obligations about students that the educator must follow. Educator must strive to help each student in order to gain their worth in society. Providing respect, confidence of others and responsibility in the teaching process.
Principle I
The eight commitments are to guide the educator when teaching in a classroom. These goals are to insure protection of freedom to learn and teach and for one’s equal education. (Strike, 2009)
Relevant to Teaching After looking over these principles, one will be able to see the strong will of an educator to teach students. These commitments provide logical viewpoints that …show more content…
educators use today. For example, “make reasonable effort to protect the student from conditions harmful to learning or to the health and safety.” Children should be in an environment that is safe and have no disruptive behavior. In the reading, Ms. Jones knew about Jonnie being beaten and in order to protect the child she lied to Mr. Pugnacious. Although, she was against liying she did not want to bring any more harm to the child. Another example, “Shall not on the basis of race, color, creed, sex, national origin, etc.” Without this commitment, I feel like educators would not make students feel safe at a school environment. They are reasonable commitments to follow and suites the education environment, as well as, not going overboard at the same time. (Strike, 2009)
Evidence
When looking at all these principles in an educational landscape, we do see them being played by the teacher.
Although, some of these commitments are being broken by educators all around the United States. For example, “not use professional relationships with students for private advantage.” This one has been done by many educators all over and it needs to be put to an end. Although you have teacher to student contact in school, it should not be done outside of a classroom. Another example, “Not unreasonably deny the students access to varying points of view.” (Strike, 2009) In the reading, Mr. Lane is trying to figure out if he should post Eddie’s story in the school’s paper. Although his paper is revenge on a teacher at school, Mr. Lane can’t deny Eddies rights to his own view points. Eddie has a freedom of press and students’ rights. However, if everyone knows about this story it would embarrass Beth. It is clear Mr. Lane doesn’t know how to help Beth and Eddie at the same time. Overall, students express viewpoint in a variety of ways through writing, drawing, music, dance, etc.
Principles Missing
After examining these principles, they provide a good standard of our education society. However, they do need to be improved or more enforced. We have many teachers breaking these codes and it feels like they were never in place. It’s all about a teacher’s attitude and how it can affect a student in school. By having positive emotions instead of negative, it shows the kids that
you care. Despite everything that might be going on in one’s life, educators push through to prove to students they believe in them. Now some days it does not seem like we have enough teacher who do. (Strike, 2009)
