This paper attempts to discuss two methodological approaches quantitative and qualitative. I will be critical reviewing and relating this assignment to two research papers, in relation to parental mental health and child welfare. Research A (Quantitative) is about; ‘Relationship between stressors and parenting attitudes in a child welfare parenting program’. Research B (Qualitative) is about; ‘Making decisions about parental mental health: An exploratory study of community mental health team staff.’ I will be referring these two papers as Research A or B, further discussing the advantages and the limitations, as well as methods that were used by the researcher to condone their research.
Research is not an easy enterprise, in fact is a process by which researchers ask questions in search of answers. Searching this on a deeper level helps you understand how it is vital that any form of research is systematic explored, well-structured questions, producing new information and reassessing old information (Bertrand & Hughes2005: 5-6). Methods are the actual techniques you use to collect evidence, such as surveys and experiments (Balnaves, Donald & Shoesmith 2009:279). Qualitative research allows individuals to understand what and how, however fails to explain why? It is an approach which focuses on interpretation information with non-mathematical analysis, but in fact emerges to measure human beliefs, attitude and behaviour. This form of research is conducted through individual interviews, group discussions and participant observation. On the other hand Quantitative research focuses on numerical calculations, statistics, data analysis, through surveys and experiments. It is often used when there is a lot of known about a topic and there is a need to better predict and specify causes and effects (Kayrooz & Trevitt 2005: 110-1),( Alasutaari 1995:
