Participants
This study will observe the juvenile participants throughout their adjustment period and examine how well they are able to cope will prison life, how well they interact with others and how they are able to cope once release from prison. This study will be a longitudinal study with a three-year reevaluation period giving the participants enough time to absorb their situation and to see if any changes occurred during those three months. Participants in this study will consist of a sample of 200 juvenile male individuals who are between the ages of 14 to 18 years of age who are to be sentence to an adult prison. Each individual will be given these scales when they arrive at the entrance of the prison. Once the scales are given an interview process will also be given to the inmates to further understand their psychological starting point. Once the interview is completed the inmates will then be process at the prison and will be given time to adjust. The inmates will then be observed by the prison staff and during the course of their incarceration at a three-year interval they juveniles will be retested again to see how well they have adjusted to their new life and update any current changes in psychological well-being for when they started to the time of the retest. This will continue on every three-years giving the inmates time to become acquainted with the lifestyle and become more familiar with the procedures that need to be done, what is expected from the inmates and to get an understanding of the rules and regulation pertaining on how the inmates should behave while they are in prison. This three-year retest point will also continue to follow the individuals even after they are released from prison just to see how they are feeling while readjusting from being in prison to being released. With this we will be able to see how much of a change each individual has gone through throughout their life in jail. With this we can then be able to generalize a solution on how we can treat inmates who are juveniles and are sentenced to adult
