Sending criminals to prison alone is not adequate in rehabilitating. Offenders should be given an opportunity to acquire job skills and knowledge. This will improve the chances of the offenders becoming productive citizens upon leaving prison. Vocational and academic education criminal rehabilitation programs are intended to equip the criminals with knowledge and skills. These specific programs aim to change the offenders who are willing to change. Not many Inmates are willing to take advantage nor can enroll in the provided programs due to their behavioral background. Attitudes and behavior that ensure survival in prison such as being tough or withdrawn tend to work against building a stable social and emotional life. Incarceration can be a traumatic experience which could be dehumanizing. Yet, going back outside the walls to society can have its own traumas. The need to provide for basic needs - food, shelter, and money - can send ex-offenders back to crime. Prisoners are not entitled to parole; rather parole boards consider number of factors when deciding whether to grant parole. Once released on parole, Parolees are granted two hundred dollars on a prepaid card, a ride to the nearest bus stop if needed, and a chance to turn their life around. At this point, Parolees can put their degrees and learned skills to good use.
The purpose of parole is to help an ex-offender re-enter society while ensuring the safety of the community. To maintain the conditions of their parole, ex-offenders must regularly report to their parole officers, look for work, and stay away from criminal activity. Failure to do so may result in jail time.
