This Has To Stop! Each year in America, at least 400,000 Americans lose their lives to cigarettes. This is at least one out of every five Americans. This epidemic is growing on a daily basis. Smoking can damage your body tremendously. Smoking can damage your lungs, brain, and heart. Smoking is a problem not only for human beings, but for America as a whole. Smoking pollutes the air. Cigarettes are made from 4,000 different chemical compounds and 400 toxic substances. Smoking is also bad for America because of “second-hand smoke”. We roam around in a universe polluted by smoke. This is why smoking cigarettes is a problem. Smokers need to realize that they are not only damaging themselves, but the others around them as well. The most damaging products that are in cigarettes are tar, nicotine, and carbon monoxide. Did you know that on an average, each cigarette shortens a smoker’s life by around 11 minutes? The number of people under the age of 70 who die from smoking-related diseases exceeds the total figure for deaths caused by breast cancer, AIDS, traffic accidents, and drug addiction. Cardiovascular disease is the main cause of death due to smoking. Smokers are more likely to develop cancer than non-smokers. Ninety percent of lung cancer causes are due to smoking. The more cigarettes you smoke a day, and the longer you’ve smoke, the higher your risk of lung cancer. Other types of common cancers that may develop because of smoking are cancer of the bladder, esophagus, kidneys, pancreas, and cervix. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a collective term for a group of conditions that block airflow and make breathing more difficult, such as: emphysema and chronic bronchitis. There are so many risks that smokers are taking each time that they smoke a cigarette. Stop and think, is it really worth it? Quitting can help! Many people feel that it is impossible to quit, but that is not true. People say that smoking helps with stress, but it is a

Smoking cigarettes can cause lung problems. Both first-hand and second-hand smokers are affected by cigarette smoke. Scientific findings and researches show that the chemicals in cigarettes, apart from the smoke, can lead to health problems such as lung cancer. Smoking cigarettes should be banned in public places. In public places, more people, both young and old, can be exposed to the smoke from cigarettes. My position differs from those who might say that smoking altogether should not be banned. My position is that smoking in public places should be banned. It does not include smoking in private places like homes. Smoking in public places should be banned because it poses health risks to individuals who are non-smokers and who do not want to inhale the fumes from cigarettes. The risks are double to those who already have lung ailments.…

According to the American Lung Association, every year about four hundred and thirty thousand Americans die alone from the effects of smoking cigarettes. Cigarette smoking also causes one in five deaths in the United States each year. Cigarette smoke is the major cause of lung cancer, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, heart disease, and stroke. Not only does cigarette smoke cause several health problems, it also is highly addictive and causes smokers to develop a highly unhealthy addiction to the nicotine in the cigarette. There are no scientific studies that prove that smoking a cigarette is not harmful to one’s health; in fact, there are several case studies proving that smoking cigarettes can be deadly to one’s health. Aside from nicotine, other carcinogens such as carbon monoxide, tar, formaldehyde, cyanide, and ammonia can be found in cigarette smoke. Prison Overpopulation remains to be an unresolved problem that the Philippines is facing and which has been facing since 2000. Yet we have never heard about it being solved. The news or the media in general do not usually report on this issue because the government has never come up with a plausible and lasting solution to this problem, thus people are unaware of the appalling nature our prison inmates are facing inside our penitentiaries. Overcrowding is the main concern for the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) which has administrative control over the country’s 1,132 city, district and municipal jails. According to the Bureau, the nationwide jail population rose from about 35,000 in 2000 to more than 58,000 in 2009, with estimates reaching as high as 72,934 in 2012. Congestion is highest in the New Bilibid Prison, which is one of the 24 overcrowded prisons in the NCR region, the prison maintains 65% of the total prison population (National Survey of Inmates and Institutional Assessment). The European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhumane or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT) recommends the use of a four square meters per person measurement of a cell for an acceptable level of crowding. The cells in the New Bilibid prison measures at most 6 square meters, more than enough for a single person but not quite enough for two if the international standards are to be based upon. Overcrowded prisons like New Bilibid prison confines as much as 4 to 5 people into a cell designed for single occupancy. These conditions can lead to a host of psychological and physical problems of whose effects can hamper the inmates reintegration to normal civilian life upon their…
