One main reason Maya Angelou’s “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings” is banned is for the pornographic language, incest, and rape. One Texas school states it is full of “gross evils”. Angelou often tells of her tragic experiences of being raped, it seems a little too much for some, less mature, audiences. Angelou is very in-depth and descriptive in her book.…
Ginsberg’s poetry was very well accounted for and to this day continues to be very well accounted for it’s qualities of insanity, commodification of society, and hypocrisy of modern society. Allen Ginsberg got the publics attention in 1956 after publishing “Howl”. “Howl”, is an objection of rage and despair against a catastrophic and abusive society. The poem stunned traditional critics. Kevin O’Sulliven deemed “Howl” as “an angry, sexually explicit poem”. James Dickey, for instance, signified “Howl” as “a whipped-up state of excitement” and determined that “it takes more than this to make poetry.” Ginsberg dealt with insanity throughout his entire life. Naomi Ginsberg, his mother, was institutionalized which left Allen without a mother or…
McLune wrote about the discrimination of black women throughout hip-hop. The dominate rhetorical appeal used by McLune is pathos, which “is an emotional appeal that involves using language that will stair the feelings of the audience” (Hooper, etal 86). She complains about being a black woman and hearing the excuses for men when they talk about women in hip-hop and how it is just okay with society. McLune is also irate about the fact that Eve, who is a female rapper raps about women in a bad way and doesn’t seem to think that, that is not right. Another type of appeal McLune uses is logos “which demonstrates an effective use of reason and judicious use of evidence” (Hooper, etal 86). Back in the 60s it was wrong and considered unfair to demonize colored men, but yet the men in today’s society are disrespecting colored women. The author explains how record labels exploit this and benefit off of the disrespect artist show black women. The least used appeal by McLune is ethos “which establishes the speaker’s or writer’s credibility” (Hooper, etal 86). Hip-hop owes its success to woman hating. Few artist dare to be different and not speak badly about women and the ones that do, they don’t make it clear that they feel it’s disrespectful for rappers to demoralize women which is not good in…
Both examples from Black Boy illustrate how words are used as weapons. His words could offend, console, enrage, or be a fatal weapon. In Wright’s unceasing quest for knowledge, he discovers a strange world that makes him feel “something new, of being affected by something that made the look of the world different.” (249). He sees the world with a whole, new different perspective and this allows him to use words as weapons to express his…

Like drugs and what’s happening in our generation and why things like this happen in our generation .The generation we live in now is totally different from now because for example “Fuck bitches, D.T.B no I dont trust bitches” if someone that was from the generation back then would have so much to say about this stanza because of the language and how it comes across to others more so females because it would be disrespectful to call a lady out of her name so by labeling a females as a “bitch” it's very much so…
Whitman broke the taboos about writing on sexuality. Although he was sexually frank in his poetry, he was strongly against whatever merely pornographical. He asserted, “No one would more rigidly keep in mind the difference between the simply erotic, the merely lascivious, and what is frank, free, modern, in sexual behavior, than I would: no one” (Reynolds, “Why I Write Cultural Biography: The Backgrounds of Walt Whitman’s America” 389). “Indeed, given the contemporary resistance to any published utterance that included sexual overtones, it is remarkable that Whitman was able to carry out his poetic project at all” (Mullins 164). He included a cluster of poems called “Enfans d’Adam” in 1860 edition of Leaves. It depicted sexual love between…
Throughout the world there are many different views on the use of swear words in everyday life. From evening family slot times to late night tv shows, cursing in society is slowly becoming part of our “normal” day to day language. Whether or not it is accepted is something different. Society has often labeled swearing one of two things: as an extreme type of language only used by the uneducated or the greatest use of power words that should be used by any and all people. Though swearing is offensive to many, it is proven to be a major extension of our vocabulary and should be tolerated and understood to a greater extent.…
The effect language has in the way it is said and presented is incredible. Although most people today are against violence they are unaware of how much they use it in their daily speech. The slight use of violence in people’s speech is where others learn their abusive behavior. It is from hearing the repeated use of this type of speech that begins to teach people that violence is acceptable. In “Winter’s Light” by Martha Kinkade, she writes poetry of past experiences of her life. Some of these experiences are violent, but by using more calm adjectives and verbs to describe the tragic events. She makes the actions sound less violent, but still is given the same effect. Through the examples of Kinkade’s poems, I will show that violent words…
Go back to XIV century when poets had to look at naked women with snow-white skin, dark blue eyes and burning red curls to produce poems, more captivating than the sunrise. Go back to when writers were considered drunk heads, with nothing to lose and nothing to gain. The only solace they had was to dress their scars in words, convey rage in a paragraph and hide the grief behind the pages.…
Nowadays, many racist and corrupt words are being used in hip-hop and rap music. Unfortunately, this genre of music is always played on the radio which is the main reason to why kids, in our time, know and use a lot of these inconvenient words. The only sensational conclusion people came up with to stop the use of such lyrics is the banning of corrupt terms from hip-hop and rap music and the prohibition of these inappropriate words is what John H. McWhorter discusses in “Banning Words from Hip-Hop and Rap Music Would Be Beneficial” (2008). McWhorter’s an African American man and the author of many books on languages and on race relations. His previous works show us that he has the capability of writing about the use of language-related topic.…
It can ruin a person chance of working in a highpoint due to the vulgar language they use or even just getting a regular job because where ever you are working your language reflects the company. It is also harmful to a person’s speech as their diction will be smaller due to cuss words replacing proper and meaningful words in sentences. In addition to that cussing provides no actually emotional benefits as proposed by some as effective methods and proof of them working have been around to help rather then ruining the language you speak by flooding your vocabulary with foul language to satisfy an emotion. This has proven that cussing is totally a waste of time for the people in society to use cause a lot more problems then its…
In today’s society, more and more inappropriate material is becoming acceptable. Children are becoming more comfortable with bad language, corrupt movies, and offensive books as they are exposed to this material more frequently. The age they begin to learn about violence, drugs, and sex is lower than ever before. Today’s generation seems to be more experienced and knowledgeable about these shockingly crude things than most adults! Parents can not stop this maturing all together; however, they can slow it down by monitoring their children. It is a parent’s right to know what their child is learning, in case it goes against their family’s views. A parent should…
Another reason is it shows how people are being victimized by sex orientation and color of they’re skin. Many song lyrics have bad examples of beating woman and rapping, and most of all killing people. Rap artist Eminem has some of the worst lyrics with Interpersonal violence. Many could say kids are acting out what the artist are saying. Our media are also showing more sexy individuals verse back in the early nineteen century, this was not allowed and there were a few people getting rapped, and sexual assaulted. Another thing is that as an individual observed another doing interpersonal violence, it is remembered or recorded in their mind and then can be replicated (Ukoha,…
Music Lyrics being NON-VIOLENT Rap music can be considered a style of art, and a way for the artists to express feelings through their words on paper. However, there are quite a few rap artists that get criticized for their lyrics. In my essay, I want to discuss why rappers use certain lyrics in their music and why people shouldn’t believe that it causes violence among the younger generations. People shouldn’t censor the music just because of violent, vulgar and abusive messages it promotes to the world. I believe in my own mind, that there is a reason for these types of lyrics that rap artists use and I will simply explain those reasons in this essay. Rap has been called one of the most important music forces to emerge in two decades. It’s pounding beats and staccato rhymes exploded on the streets of the urban America in the early 1980s and since have become the theme music and lyrical heart of the vibrant youth culture called hip-hop ( SIRS 1993). There are many different types of rap artist. There are some that talk about money, some talk about righteousness, and the list goes on and on. Every rap artist had their own way of expressing themselves. There are those that talk about sex, drugs, and violence who receive the negative attention( SIRS 1993). People, think this so- called gangster rap is a bad influence on children in the world and that it promotes violence and that it also is abusive to women. Delores Tucker, head of national congress of black women has been among those pressuring different record companies to stop distributing gangster rap music. There were other significant names that participated in this action. Names like Senate Majority leader Bob dole, and former education Secretary William J. Bennett(Surveys, pg. 1). There are some rap artists that have been openly criticized for their lyrics. Rappers like Lil Kim, Too Short, Snoop Doggy Dogg, and a member from “Too Live Crew,” named Luke Skywalker. These rap artists in the past have been…
