Professor Wilson's Essay 'Shyness: Evolutionary Tactic'
Can you imagine a world without E = mc 2, the scientific method, or even Harry Potter? Society has directed us to believe that introversion is a negative quality. Some famous introverts include Albert Einstein, Charles Darwin, and J. K. Rowling. If these influential people had been “diagnosed” with shyness and “treated” for it, they may not have had the opportunity to make the powerful contributions they gave to modern society.
The following is an excerpt from the essay “Shyness: Evolutionary Tactic” that describes the experiment Professor Wilson conducted.
“In an illustrative experiment, David Sloan Wilson, a Binghamton evolutionary biologist, dropped metal traps into a pond of pumpkin seed sunfish. The ‘rover’ fish couldn’t help but investigate — and were immediately caught. But the ‘sitter’ fish stayed back, making it impossible for Professor Wilson to capture them. Had Professor Wilson’s traps posed a real threat, only the sitters would have survived. But had the

I do not mind being around big crowds, but that doesn't mean I want to crash every party I am invited to. Having an active social life and extending my network of friends is relatively important to me, but it is not the most crucial thing. I have managed to strike an important balance between actively involving myself in my larger social network and spending quality time with a few intimate friends. Although I may not always be the conversation-starter or the "life of the party", I am generally a very outgoing individual, whether among friends or people I am less familiar with. I can easily relate to both extremes on the personality spectrum, and have an easier time delving in and out of the internal and external worlds. This may lead to feelings of confusion as many times I may feel like a “walking contradiction”, feeling one thing one moment, and another thing the

Susan Cain empowers and motivates introverts like herself in Quiet by explaining the positive aspects of introversion that she also experiences: “I also believe that introversion is my greatest strength. I have such a strong inner life that I’m never bored and only occasionally lonely. No matter what mayhem is happening around me, I know I can always turn inward” (Cain 98). This demonstrates Cain’s stance on her introverted characteristics and shows how she is a proud introvert. This motivates other introverts to be proud of their personality and not give in to the negative stereotypes of introversion in…

Once a drastic change occurs in an individual’s life, they often find it difficult to relocate or recreate their state and situation before the alteration, thus, repeatedly struggle with what presents them in substitution. Red Woolen Misconceptions I am numb. The shrieks from the small children bounding around like molecules in a heated solution cut through the air, and despite this joyous sound, I am numb. My child will never be able to make that sound. My hand instinctively moves to caress my now flat stomach, a habit developed over the past six months as it grew.…

You have the dominate few people who over power the others where it’s hard to contribute. However, I can focus on the points I will not be getting because of my lack of participation because I am not as talkative as I may seem outside of class when it comes to group speaking. In the article Voices: Typically quiet students suffer in classes with participation grade, by Danielle Bissonette says, “Why should outgoing people rule the world? People often say that we live in a racist, sexist world, but I’d go so far as to argue that we live in an extroverted world where introverts are consistently discriminated against.” In today’s society there is nothing wrong with being an extrovert but on the other hand, being an introvert is seen as a disadvantage. Socratic seminars require one to share ideas and talk in front of a group of people they may be unfamiliar with and therefore, causing a great deal of stress. In the same article Voices: Typically quiet students suffer in classes with participation grade, by Danielle Bissonette she makes a good point when she says, “Class participation is not fair, as it automatically gives an unfair advantage to extroverted students. A shy student could be the brightest in the class, but she will automatically lose up to 30 percent of her grade just because she’s afraid to participate.”…

Cain is effective in supporting and proving her argument. People who read Quiet will exit with a higher understanding of the psychological and behavior sides of introverts. This novel is important to people on both ends of the spectrum: the introverts will learn way to stay true to themselves while still making their mark, and the extroverts will learn how to listen and be more open to the quieter members of…

Growing up, I was always viewed as a person that didn’t like any type of socialization. I was portrayed as a quiet, nerdy, reserved individual that had very limited conversations with those around me. Unfortunately, the people that said this about me were wrong. In reality, if I were to describe myself to someone that doesn’t know me, I would tell them that I’m a very outgoing, laid back, intelligent, trustworthy, responsible, friendly, funny, outspoken, and social individual.…
