The University of Cape Coast (UCC) in Ghana was established in 1962 out of a dire need for highly qualified and skilled manpower in education and was affiliated to the University of Ghana. It was established to train graduate teachers for second cycle institutions such as teacher training colleges and technical institutions, a mission that the two existing universities were unequipped to fulfill. Since its establishment, the university has added to its functions the training of education planners, administrators, agriculturalists and health care professionals.

In 2013, the centre for Research, Advocacy and Documentation( CEGRAD) was established as a means of addressing the gender disparities that existed in the University although the University at the time could boast of the first ever woman Vice-Chancellor in the West African sub region who took office in October 2008. There are indeed gaps in existing gender equity initiatives in the university, challenges associated with operationalizing existing initiatives and strategies for promoting CEGRAD as an interdisciplinary focal point for providing a theoretical grounding for gender and women’s studies at UCC.
