First of all, I think that Project Stratos is the most important event in 2012, because Felix is the first man in history to break the speed of sound in freefall and he also broke two other world records.
During his fall, Felix Baumgartner broke the speed of sound reaching an estimated speed of 1,342.8 km/h. To be able to break the speed of sound, he had to climb to 39,045 metres in a helium-filled balloon. His entire trip back to earth lasted 9:09 minutes, with 4:22 of that time in free-fall. During his free-fall, Felix started to spin rapidly, which is very dangerous, but he quickly regained control. In an interview, Felix said: “I thought I’d just spin a few times and that would be that, but then I started to speed up. It was really brutal at times. I thought for a few seconds that I’d lose consciousness.” The other two records he broke were: the highest free-fall and the highest manned balloon flight. That is why I am certain, Mr. Lemieux that Project Stratos should be considered the most important event in 2012 because of these three incredible records that Baumgartner broke.
Second of all, I think that Project Stratos is one of the most important events of 2012, if not the most important, because it helped scientists to improve their knowledge about the effects of breaking the speed of sound on the body. Baumgartner ‘s freefall proved that with a good equipment adapted to this extreme event and a proper training, a human being can safely break the sound barrier without any motorized vehicle. Baumgartner’s heartbeat reached a maximum of 185 bpm when he exited the capsule and ranged from 155 to 175 bpm during freefall. Felix explains his experience of breaking the sound barrier in this way: “It feels like you are floating into space, and then you pick up speed very fast—but you don’t feel the air because the air density is so low. For almost 35 seconds I couldn’t sense the air around me because basically there was none. That kind of helpless feeling is annoying as a professional skydiver. And then when you finally enter a thicker air layer you have to keep yourself completely symmetrical because otherwise you start spinning, which is what happened to me.” This is why I think that Project Stratos is the most important event of 2012.
Finally, I am certain that Project Stratos should be considered the most important event that happened of 2012, because three world records were broken and this experience helped scientists to improve their knowledge about the effects on the body when breaking the sound barrier. Now that we know that a human being can break the sound barrier, when do you think we will be able to go to the speed of light?
