Promote Effective Communication Research

A) Effective communication between you and a child, young person or adult is key to building positive relationships between you all. Being a teaching assistant you are going to come into contact with these people on a daily basis, it may be a child in your class, a student off a course from a school or college, a work colleague or a parent. You must be respectful, considerate and able to listen to others. You need to be clear on key points of information or instructions you are giving to them, have a sense of humour after all there will be times when laughter is needed and this can this can ease a stressful situation. And it is good to remember things personal to them ie a birthday, a colleague’s sick child or their preferred name or how they
like to be addressed. In doing this you are in turn building a positive relationship with that individual, they in turn will then communicate better with you because of this and are more likely to put this into practice themselves. It’s not just the way you talk to someone either it’s about how you act and react to a situation, it’s also about your body language too, children and people are very perceptive and although you are saying one thing your face or body can be doing another thing and telling a different story to what you have said. The more comfortable a child/ person feels in your company the more likely you are to have a positive relationship with them which means they will freely communicate with you and this is beneficial to all concerned as it builds up a good effective relationship with the child/ parent and builds up a good support network between home and school, college etc and also stops to any misguided feelings because you are sharing information freely between each other.
