1.1 Explain what is meant by:
• Diversity
- Each person is individual and unique
- Encompass respect and acceptance
- It is about understanding each other and moving beyond simple tolerance
- “Differences between individuals and groups of people”
Diversity is about respecting individual differences these can be: ethnicity, physical abilities, gender, age, religious, beliefs, sexual orientation, material status, politic, region, religion, disability.
• Inclusion
- Inclusion is about taking action to remove barriers
- Also involves eliminating discrimination
- Inclusion promotes equality
- It is the “process of identifying, understanding and breaking down barriers to participation and belonging” .
• Equality protects people from being discriminated. Equality is a term of ‘Equal Opportunities’ - “having opportunities to achieve and flourish which are as good as the opportunities available to others” . It is base on the legal obligation to comply with anti-discrimination legislation.
1.2 Describe the potential effects of discrimination.
- The effects of discrimination can be physical or emotional. For example a young person who cannot speak English can be discriminate by other teenager.
- Children with disabilities may be discriminate as some of them cannot speak properly and for other children may be odd, fanny or weird as they cannot understand what they are saying. Those children who are discriminate may not want to play with others.
- People with different backgrounds may be discriminate as they are not understood by others. Those people are not likely to attend any parents meeting or children’s club in a Children’s Centre. Those family and their children may be isolated from society.
Possible effects of discrimination
• Stress
• Depression
• Fear
• Low self esteem (‘I cannot look at myself’)
• Feeling isolated (‘I want to stay at
