Question 1 Case Study 1
1a) Who is being discriminated against?
Sally has been attending nursery school for three months. Both Sally and her family; who are travellers, are being discriminated against.
2a) What kind of discrimination is taking place?
The discrimination taking place for Sally and her family could be considered to be direct; Sally is being treated less favourably than her peers, associative; Sally comes from a travelling community & perceptive; expectations within the local community and key worker that Sally will move away from the area. Sally is also being denied equal opportunities.
3a) How might the child experiencing the discrimination feel?
The child experiencing the discrimination may feel anger, loss of self-esteem, lack of motivation, confusion, disappointment, depression and disempowerment which in turn are all likely to impact upon academic progress too.
4a) How might the discrimination affect other children in the setting?
The discrimination could affect other children by them becoming aware of the differences that were happening in the classroom. This could result in bullying taking place. Being denied the opportunity to learn about or practise cultural diversity in society, the children could become prejudiced by forming an opinion of Sally that is not based on fact. The children could be denied the chance to learn and practise basic equal opportunity skills.
5a) What could be done to prevent the discrimination?
To prevent discrimination with regard to the pupil staff relationship, school policy should be used and adhered too. If derogatory comments are made by any member of staff, the line manager or headmaster must talk with the person responsible as both practise and procedure are linked directly to school policy. Staff should also demonstrate knowledge of current policies and
