Imagine driving and looking into your rearview mirror and seeing red, white, and blue flashing lights. What are your first thoughts? What if I told you that you and the police didn’t have the same thoughts? What if I told you the Police Officer intensions were on shooting you and nobody would know? Why? Because there are no cameras involved. Police Officers should be required to wear body cameras because it may reduce the amount of violence and dishonest cops; On the other hand, Police Officers should not be required to wear body cameras because it will promote dishonest reporting.
Police Officers should be required to wear body cameras because it may reduce the amount of dishonest cops. In the article, “The Right Body Camera
Policy” it states “In general, watching body camera footage should reduce dishonesty in incident reports.” To summarize, each cop that says they did one thing and didn’t do it OR say they didn’t do it and did it will be caught on camera fabricating, meaning no one in the office will trust that Officer anymore. All in all, Police Officers should be required to wear body cameras because it may reduce the amount of dishonest cops.
On the contrary, Police Officers should not be required to wear body cameras because it will promote dishonest reporting. The authors Dan Simon and Jim Bueermann from the article “The Right Body Camera Policy” states “Officers, it is feared, will tailor their reports to fit the captured images, revealing only what could not be plausibly denied and leaving out other important details.” In this case, if Officers get to view and put in the report about the incident there is no telling if they are going to leave out key details. Some officers could cut out the parts that shows them behaving but leave out the part where it shows them either beating, shooting or doing anything other than what they’re supposed to be doing.
Ultimately, the use of body cameras should both reduce the use of force and lessen the need and the opportunity to lie about it. The reasons are simple and explainable. If someone gets hurt and no one can explain why or how it got to that point there are the body cameras that come in handy so whenever you need evidence the body cameras will be here.
