The election process for the president has many pros and cons attributed to it, though it remains the proven method for selecting who should wield the powers of the Executive Branch. Presidential Race is the two-party system. American voters are corralled into the pens of the candidate who they disagree with the least instead of voting for the individuals who they wholeheartedly support.
The current structure of the United States government includes several instances of appointments ex: Supreme Court Justices, Cabinet Members, Ambassadors, etc.
and these appointments are usually in line with the political views of the individual or group selecting the appointee. This is not dissimilar to the appointment of a private company’s CEO by a board of directors. A benefit to this appointment style is that the process becomes more streamlined, less costly, and allows the selectors to have a much higher content knowledge of their candidates than the voting public may have in a United States election. The downside to appointment is the board of directors can be extremely partial to certain candidates for personal gain and an appointment vote can be swayed fairly easily. This could lead to a selection of a CEO who is not the best candidate for the company, but the best candidate for a specific group of
directors.
In order for for the current structure of american government to succeed, the selection of the President must be done through an election, else the position would be filled by an individual who represents the interests of a specific group of government officials instead of the American Public. While the election process has its faults, the implementation of an appointment system would create more problems than it solves. The meaning of securing a qualified candidate is truly established by what the American people determine “qualified” to mean, for it can be a highly different definition to different people.
